The Place Beyond the Pines - Many Deleted Scenes

Director Talks About 20 Minutes of Unused Material

Even though Ryan Gosling stepped into the limelight with Drive, his earlier works had quality, as well. For example Blue Valentine, an intense drama directed by Derek Cianfrance. Both men re-teamed for Cianfrance's next directorial effort The Place Beyond the Pines, which also stars Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes. During the press junket prior to the theatrical start, Cianfrance sat down with Collider, who asked him about the postproduction process and the editing of The Place Beyond the Pines.

Cianfrance said that the editing is the one thing he hates about filmmaking because he had to remove material in which actors give him so much and also scenes where his friends or his mother were in because the scenes didn't benefit the final film. Furthermore, the US distributor Focus Features has never released a longer version of its films and considers the theatrical version the director's cut. Still, Cianfrance looks forward to put many deleted scenes onto the upcoming DVD/BD releases that could add up to a total runtime of approx. 20 minutes.
