Thriller - A Cruel Picture: Synapse Blu-ray
2022 is a good year for the legendary grindhouse film Thriller - A Cruel Picture (Sweden, 1974 - alternate title: Thriller - They Call Her One-Eye). Firstly Synapse Films announced the Blu-ray premiere and just a few days later Vinegar Syndrome even promised a 4K release. The latter should be available from May 2022 in the respective in-house store (currently not yet available for order).
The US Blu-ray from Synapse, which has been available since February 22, 2022, was already in front of us for a review. Basically, you could already guess: Synapse has simply used the same master 1:1 as on their DVD released in 2004. Of course, now in real HD, but qualitatively you won't be too overwhelmed with the result. On top of that, they've also included the censored Vengeance Edition DVD (see our report) as a bonus disc. As pictured below, this is advertised on the back cover as "For those who prefer to watch the film without the strong sexual content and full eye-gouging". The reality was more likely that there were still some remaining stocks of this in the warehouse.
It should be noted that for the upcoming UHD premiere, Vinegar Syndrome has promised "a fresh 4K restoration from its original, uncensored 16mm A/B rolls, which have never been accessed previously for any other release". Perhaps there is still something else to discover and the Synapse master was not actually complete after all. There are supposed to be signs of this in the (in other places heavily censored) German theatrical version. We will of course check the 4K Blu-ray for differences to the Synapse DVD/Blu-ray once it's available.
