The Good, the Bad & the Ugly - Kino Lorber 4K UHD

Finally a true reconstruction of the international theatrical cut

Sergio Leone's classic western Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (aka The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) has had an eventful history of different versions. Leone himself had supervised the international theatrical version at the time. The more than 15 minutes longer version, which has become the standard option on many DVDs and Blu-rays, adds material from the original Italian release, but was probably never approved by the director.

At least two other alternative versions have been created over the years. We broke this down in more detail in the report on the 2017 US Blu-ray by Kino Lorber. That Blu-ray was an attempt to reconstruct the international theatrical version. However, e. g. some alternative shots of the long version were mistakenly used in a few places, similar to the 1998 DVD from MGM. In various film forums worldwide, the outcry among purists was great.

On April 27, 2021, the step to the next medium was now done in the USA with the 4K UHD premiere. In the Blu-ray.com forum, for example, it was quickly heard that Kino Lorber had taken the criticism into account and this time more cleanly recreated the international theatrical version. Of course, we still took a closer look at the re-release and can state:

  • The editing errors (= any places documented in the report on the 2017 US Blu-ray by Kino Lorber where material from the long version slipped in or material from the intenational version was forgotten) are now actually no longer objectionable, so that a correct reconstruction of the international theatrical version is available.
  • The old UA logo as well as the English credits correspond to the 2017 Blu-ray. However, this should also be correct with regard to the international theatrical version and only deviates on the US laserdisc we used for comparison. Of course, one can argue about the altered Grimaldi credit in that regard though.
  • The dissolve in the 24th minute still has a red tint for the few frames that were inserted from a deviating source.
  • The set also comes with a new Blu-ray, by the way. This 2021 edition fortunately also contains the corrected cut version and is thus not a repack of the 2017 Blu-ray.
