Burning Paradise: Eureka's BBFC18 Blu-ray is uncut

UK release of Ringo Lam's previously censored film with horsefalls

Burning Paradise UK Blu-ray Eureka
After e.g. School on Fire and Full Contact, among many other films, Burning Paradise was one of Ringo Lam's last directorial efforts in Hong Kong before he headed several productions in the U.S. with Jean-Claude van Damme. The gritty actioner had some trouble with censorship at home. Two bits of violence were cut in Hong Kong at the time (see our report), but fortunately were included in foreign releases and also later on the Hong Kong Blu-ray.

In the UK, there was the unfortunate circumstance on VHS that although the Made in Hong Kong label had a "Full Uncut Version" notation on the tape and the BBFC also listed no cuts, the version was still shortened by around 5 minutes. Presumably the film was cut here in advance by the label or they only had an already shorter version at hand for other reasons.

Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to check the VHS, but the uncut version has a few nasty horse falls right at the beginning, for example. Many BBFC guidelines have loosened over time, but such animal cruelty is actually still a point even in recent years with various releases of genre titles from Italy or Asia, because of which the titles mostly released by 88 Films or Eureka are often slightly censored for the new Blu-rays.

After Vinegar Syndrome released an uncut Blu-ray in the U.S. in late 2022, Eureka's counterpart has been available in the U.K. since May 29, 2023. A re-release with the BBFC is not yet listed. We fortunately got hold of this UK Blu-ray before the official release date, and after comparing it to the U.S. Blu-ray, we're happy to confirm that the film is uncensored. A small difference in running time only arises from the lack of Vinegar Syndrome's logo after the credits (as expected in the UK).

So those who rely on region code B can grab this one without hesitation, as this is the first time the film has been released uncut in the UK. It should also be noted that you could already see a horse fall in the in-house pre-release trailer of Eureka. In this respect, that was probably already a small "good" omen.
