Details About Chinese Bonus Scenes in Iron Man 3

Director Shane Black Wasn't Involved That Much

When the news broke recently that China gets its own version of Iron Man 3 that is enriched with exclusive scenes, the mood in Western countries was not really euphoric. The questions are: do the Chinese get scenes that fans of Iron Man 3 would've liked to see in other countries, as well? Isn't that even a bit unfair? Does the world's fastest growing market for cinema really need that kind of charm offensive?

Those questions weren't answered yet, but at least they don't seem to be that important by now as they are obviously scenes that weren't even directed by Shane Black himself. During a press conference, he told the audience that he was only informed about the content of the scenes and had a veto right if there was anything he didn't like. So it doesn't seem to be of tremendous importance and nothing that was planned for the film in the first place. The Chinese, it seems, cook their own dinner here.

"There was the idea of a Chinese version where it would entail additional footage that I was asked to look at and approve. I was busy doing the American version while we were simultaneously obtaining footage for the Chinese version, so I got a sense of what was going on. I was asked to look at and had a chance later to approve the footage, so now you’ve got these two versions. I’m just thrilled that we got the opportunity to work with what is one of the single fastest emerging box office environments in the world, which is China, where they build theaters so quickly now."

Iron Man 3 starts in US cinemas on May 3rd, 2013, the UK already got it on April 25th, 2013.
