Video Game Ratings to Become Binding in the US?

Congressman Submits New Draft Bill

In contrast to other countries such as the UK, the American ESRB ratings are not binding by law. The Democrat congressman has now submitted a draft bill entitled "H.R. 287" which is supposed to change that. The specific changes that the bill introduces, are:

  1. a rating on the artwork of the video game will be obligatory
  2. prohibition to sell or rent video games to children and adolescents that are not of the necessary age

Many stores in the US do already follow such a policy as it is set in the 2nd point. The new law would make such a behaviour mandatory.
