Super Mario Bros. - Is a Director's Cut Possible? The opinions about Super Mario Bros. are relatively clear. The 1993 released movie with Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper in the leading roles flopped enormously. The makers probably didn't really know what to do with Nintendo's video game hype about plumbers. The world's most famous video game character made his first appearance in the arcade game Donkey Kong (1981). And as life has it, film flops often become cult flicks years later, which can unite a huge fan base behind them. This in turn has become an indispensable part of pop culture. For this reason, there is also the American fansite for the movie Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive. This site is a true treasure trove with all the information about the Super Mario Bros. universe. Back in May 2019, the makers of the fan site informed that they had found the "Holy Grail". At an eBay auction, a VHS tape with lost footage of Super Mario Bros. surfaced. It is planned to digitize the tape in order to restore the material for an upcoming Blu-ray release. We will of course keep you up to date with news about the project should it actually come to a release.
