X-Force - Chances for an R-Rated Adaptation?

Deadpool May Have Paved the Way

Who would have thought? Deadpool gained $135 million at the US box office alone in the course of just 4 days and is shattering records all around. Astonishing numbers for the X-Men franchise, especially since this has been accomplished with the "R" rating. That raises fan hopes that maybe other films could get a similar treatment that brings them closer to their oftentimes more violence comic origins. Sure, Deadpool 2 is a safe bet for that continuation, but what about other stuff? X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit will surely be PG-13. What's possible apart from that?

A likely candidate for an R-rated adaptation would be the planned X-Force film that will feature Deadpool and Cable, among others. During a Q&A, producer Simon Kinberg debated that possibility:

“I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and who knows?”

Rob Liebfeld tried to deflate that aspect somewhat but adds at the same time that he could imagine an R-rated X-Men universe.

“I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Force is R-rated].”
