The Hobbit - Warner Bros. Announces Extended Cut Let's recap: Initially, the story of The Hobbit was supposed to be told in two films called An Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again. Then, director Peter Jackson announced that he wanted to film more material than would fit in two films. This led to discussions with Warner Bros. and was followed by the announcement to make it a trilogy after all. The added installment is called The Desolation of Smaug. Since some fans already worried that the novel by Tolkien with its 260 pages barely has the substance to generate three films, the quick reply was that Jackson will add several elements from the Appendixes in order to have more to show. So now one could think that the extension to three films enables Peter Jackson to tell everything he wants to tell. However, that's still not the end of it all. Warner Bros. made an announcement and already teased that an Extended Edition of An Unexpected Journey will be released on the home cinema releases in late 2013. With this, Jackson and Warner Bros. stay true to the strategy they followed with the original LotR films that were all prolonged later on. Time will tell if this extended cut of the first Hobbit movie will improve the movie and whether the other two films of this franchise will also get this treatment.
