Expendables 3 - Director Talks Assembly Cut

Lots of Deleted Scenes Could End Up on Blu-ray

Let's recap the key events discussed in previous news:

  • Expendables 3 was censored for a PG-13 rating in the US after the previous 2 films were rated R (CHECK)
  • Instead of delivering old school action for adults as conceptualized earlier, Stallone now wants to be the cool uncle for the kids (CHECK)
  • For home video, a longer version is to be expected. Kids no longer have access. (CHECK)

What new info has director Patrick Hughes to share at this point? Well, of course, he says that the film is still action-packed and brutal but just misses lots of blood spurts (either because they were cut out or just not painted in digitally, yet). Also, he says that the first cut of the movie, the so-called assembly cut, had a duration of 3.5 hours. Some of the material is, of course, obsolete and can be removed without further ado, reducing the runtime in the second round drastically.

But there are still real deleted scenes left. For example, Hughes mentions that the bar scene was originally almost 15 minutes long and he is happy to put that on the Blu-ray if the studio lets him. So maybe, that leaves room for an Extended Cut that doesn't only restore and extend the violence but also brings new story scenes. However, considering that the theatrical version already ran 126 minutes, it bares the question where fans would see the priorities.
