The Hobbit - Info on Extended Scenes

Empire Delivers Details of 3 Scenes (Spoilers!)

As was confirmed a few days ago, The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey will be prolonged for the home video releases. 20-25 additional minutes will extend the runtime of the first film of the trilogy beyond the 3-hour mark. The film magazine Empire held some interviews with cast & crew and got some details regarding the content of some of the additional footage that we'll get to see in the already finished Extended Cut.

Information could be gathered for 3 scenes:

  • Gandalf meets Bilbo when he is still a child. Gandalf shows some magic tricks (e.g. a magic dragon) and Bilbo seems to like that very much. This scene should help to understand better why Gandalf chooses Bildbo for the journey. The theatrical cut shows shortly that Bilbo and Gandalf must know each other from earlier times and Bilbo doesn't quite recall that but it isn't shown in the form of a flashback.
  • The dwarves, who reluctantly entered Rivendell, will apparently have a new scene where they anger the elves with their rude behavior.
  • Furthermore, there will be additional moments with the white ork, the main villain of the heroes. Jackson stated that these were mainly cut because of runtime issues.

It remains to be seen if the release strategy is the same is it was with the Lord of the Rings movies, where the Extended Cuts came several months after the theatrical versions hit the shelves. Considering the fact that the longer version of the first Hobbit film is already completed, we'll have to wait what Warner Bros. plans. It could be early 2013 or shortly before the 2nd film starts in theaters. If they are fan-friendly, they won't try to milk them twice.
