The Tree of Life - Extended Cut by Criterion As already reported in 2013, a much longer version of Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life would have been an option. And apparently, it still is. With a length of 139 minutes, the Theatrical Version of the drama starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn is anything but short already but the upcoming Criterion release will contain additional 50 minutes. The additional footage will reveal more of the backstory of Pitt's family and there will be a further lining of Sean Penn's plot as well. Malick considers the Theatrical Version still "his Director's Cut" and this new Extended Cut will shed some light on certain things. Also, the release should be quite interesting for technophiles because in addition to a revised color grading, the release will be based on an entirely new 4K scan.
