Independence Day - Extended Cut in HD Roland Emmerich directed Independence Day in 1996 and there was no doubt that it was planned as a massive (and successful) blockbuster, armed with a giant marketing campaign and with a budget that earned it an Oscar for visual effects. Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid are some of the actors that we accompany through the 145 minutes of the theatrical version - but there was still room for more. Back in 1998, a special edition Laserdisc was released, featuring more than 8 additional minutes of plot scenes. However, the added pieces of the Extended Cut were only available in standard definition and subsequently, the audio quality wasn't the best, either. But when preparations were made to shoot a long-rumored sequel, the discussions about an HD release of the first film and its longer version heated up again. And 20th Century Fox has heard the fans, releasing the restored edition of the Extended Cut (and the theatrical version with improved picture and sound) on Blu-ray starting May 3rd, 2016. There will also be an Ultimate Edition with a booklet and a miniature 3D version of the spaceship used to infiltrate the mothership in the finale. You can order the Blu-ray at Amazon.com or at Amazon.co.uk, where it comes out on May 30th, 2016. ![]()
