We Checked: The Last Of Us Is NOT Entirely Uncut

EU Version At Least Censored in Multiplayer Mode

It seemed so unsuspicious at first. The German branch of SCED issued a press release which said that German gamers could be happy to enjoy the high profile game The Last Of Us totally uncensored in comparison to the EU version of the game. That sounded good at first, since Germany has a difficult situation with game censorship. But this time around, it seems to be a case of clever wording by Sony's marketing office.

Shortly after the release of The Last Of Us, gamers owning the EU version started heated discussions claiming that there's still censorship going on. They specifically referred to the multiplayer mode, in which it was allegedly impossible to dismember enemies and also that the amound of blood spurts was reduced.

Since Sony is well-known for its strategy to produce one single version per region (e.g. Europe), which led to some similar examples (see Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal: Black or God of War: Ascension), we decided to check these claims and compared the multiplayer mode of both the EU and US version of The Last Of Us. And after a first check, we can confirm that at least one "detail" is missing in the EU version. Here, it is indeed not possible to dismember the enemies. One of our authors is currently busy with an in-depth analysis and tries to do it as fast as possible, however, since he will also routinely check the single player mode just in case, we have to ask for your patience until the final comparison will be released.

Sony's German marketing branch was clever here. They only said that the German release was unaltered in comparison to the EU version. They didn't say "unaltered compared to the rest of the world" or "unaltered compared to the US version". Still, it smells a little funny and that apparently all of Europe is affected by this censorship, doesn't make it better. We still want to introduce the theoretical possibility of a coding bug but it rather looks like a deliberate alteration.

Those who see this as enough proof already in order to avoid any EU release of the game, can still opt for the completely uncensored US version. It is codefree so there are no region issues either.

You can order the US version of The Last of Us at Amazon.com
