The Avengers: Also Censored in Great Britain

British Version Has Same Adjustments (Spoiler)

Yesterday, The Avengers came out on DVD/BD in the UK (where it is called Avengers Assemble). Unfortunately, the home video releases contain the same censored version that was released e.g. in Germany and numerous other countries (see earlier news).

Just like they did in Germany, Disney also issued a statement in the UK, saying that this scene was already altered in cinemas.

"There’s been no censorship, no foul play," declares Disney UK home entertainment spokesperson Lydia Rodrigues, "the version of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble on Blu-ray disc in the UK is the same as the version shown theatrically. It really is." (Homecinemachoice)

However, there's the rating report of the British BBC that explicitly mentions this scene for the theatrical version of the movie:

A slightly stronger moment occurs when a man is stabbed through the back by the chief villain's spear. The detail of the impact is not shown, only the tip of the spear protruding from the man's chest with a small amount of blood on it. (BBFC)

The BBFC did also release a statement, saying:

The DVD/Blu-ray version of MARVEL AVENGERS ASSEMBLE is classified 12. It differs from the theatrical version submitted to the BBFC which is classified 12A. (BBFC)

Censored in cinemas or not, the final outcome isn't satisfying for the fans of this mega success. With a little reluctance, it might be acceptable for those that don't want to import the uncensored version from the US, though.

For many fans, this should be the lesser of all problems when you think about the strong complaints that some bonus materials (e.g. an audio commentary with Joss Whedon) isn't included in the European releases and even the US don't contain everything. And we'd rather not talk about the debacle with the suitcase edition with all Disney/Marvel films in the US...

If we look at the best constellation for Disney, they want the customers of the US store Target to get the best possible edition of The Avengers. All the others have to accept less. At least until the next sales offensive brings new editions.
