Comparison between the censorded TV cut on Disc 1 and the Extended Cut on Disc 2 (both available on the UK/US Blu-ray by Arrow/Severin).
A couple of additional master errors, each under 0.5 sec in duration, were not listed in the report.
In 2017, a very limited Blu-ray was released in the U.S. by Scorpion Releasing, which included a 10-minute longer extended version. Whether this is really worth an upgrade, we have analyzed in more detail in the dedicated report. In February 2022, a new Blu-ray was released in parallel in the UK by Arrow Video as well as in the US by Severin Video. On disc 1, this contains a new scan of the theatrical version and the US TV version. On disc 2 a newly created extended version can be found.
Additionally, Arrow Video has exclusively released the "Nasty Edition" with a third disc in their in-house store as another special edition. There are 3 (or even 4) more versions included:
In the following report, we go into more detail about the differences of the US TV version. The approximately 10 minutes of additional action scenes in the Extended Cut are all from here. These were already described in the old report on the theatrical version and here the TV censorships should be in the foreground. Hence we have used the extended version as a basis for comparison. Unsurprisingly, the flamethrower scene in particular has been extensively censored. Here you also get to see some harmless alternate takes, while for the extended cuts the more explicit material from the theatrical version was used. A few additional lines of dialogue censorship are also to be found. Curious are several cuts during the clothing advice in the second half. Possibly it was intended to reduce the homosexual innuendos. By the way: According to the booklet, no actual television broadcasts of this version are known. Apparently it was put together hastily, but broadcasters were not interested. Since 2021, an approximately 90-minute version has been available on VOD from Amazon Prime US. Presumably that's the TV version as well. 02:42-02:45 / 02:42-02:46
When the burning Ben is extinguished, the first shot of Donny watching motionless is somewhat cut short. This end of the shot is used shortly thereafter as a recut to cover up the "son of a bitch" from foreman Vito. Note: In contrast to most of the following audio censorship, this cut was reconstructed on the 2017 Scorpion Blu-ray after all. So Vito's complete insult can still be heard there. Uncut 1 sec longer
02:48 / 02:49-02:51 The follow-up shot of Donny is shortened at the end. Along with this, part of Vito's further commentary has been brought forward. Instead of "You hear me, you crazy bastard?" you can immediately hear "Come over here and help us!" 2,5 sec
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 03:29-03:35 / 03:32-03:38 Vito yells at Donny: "...and you stand here like a faggot." Only the last word was quite conspicuous redubbed for the TV cut with "nut case". Donny's reply "I'm not a faggot" was consequently changed to "nut case" as well.
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Alternative 03:38-03:41 / 03:41-03:44 An alternative switch to other workers, when foreman Vito criticized Donny for his lack of support. This was changed because you can see a poster with a nude girl besides Bob in the theatrical cut. As this is a no-go for US television it was changed in the TV cut. Unfortunately Scorpion didn't redo this censorship. No time difference
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Alternative 04:11-04:14 / 04:14-04:17 We can see the alternative shot once again. No time difference
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Alternative 04:22-04:26 / 04:25-04:29 And again. No time difference
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 05:03 / 05:06 Donnie comments "He's a faggot, not me", which obviously was redubbed to "nut case" again.
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 19:42 / 19:45 "She's a bitch" by one of the guys has been redubbed into "She's trouble".
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray 20:14 / 20:16-20:18 The guys on the corner can be seen a little longer and one comments: "Maybe you should try..." Note: Right before that, one of the guys is supposed to say "You're too ugly, bitch" according to the Arrow/Severin subtitles, while the TV version is subtitled "You're too ugly, man" at that point. But in all uncensored audio tracks of the theatrical version you can't really hear the B-word and the TV version sounds identical here. So it's probably just a mistake in the subtitles and not another censorship of the TV version / Scorpion Blu-ray. 1.5 sec
20:26 / 20:30-20:32 One of the guys makes an obscene hand gesture at his crotch at the end of the shot. 1.9 sec
20:32 / 20:38-20:39 Same thing at the beginning of the subsequent setting. 1.6 sec
Alternative 26:38-26:46 / 26:45-26:56 An alternative shot of Kathy. In the TV version she is seen from behind, in all uncensored versions you can see her from the front. Note: Only in Open Matte you can also see the breasts at the bottom. TV versions at that time would have surely run in full screen, hence the adjustment. Uncut 2.4 sec longer
Alternative 26:48-26:50 / 26:58-27:00 Another alternate shot of her. No time difference
Alternative 26:52-26:55 / 27:02-27:05 Once again when you see her feet. No time difference
Alternative 26:58-27:02 / 27:08-27:14 Another shot from the back vs. the front in full glory. Again, there is a bit more to see here in Open Matte below. Scorpion had moved the widescreen crop a bit so that you can still see the genital area at the bottom. Uncut 1.5 sec longer
27:28 / 27:39-27:44 After the shot of Donnie in front of the box, another shot of Kathy is missing. 4.9 sec
27:38 / 27:54-28:09 More cuts between Kathy screaming for help and the door. 15.3 sec
Alternative 27:48-27:50 / 28:19-28:22 Again, another shot of Kathy. No time difference
27:56 / 28:27-28:31 Kathy is seen a moment longer after Donny passes her. 3.2 sec
Alternative 28:00-28:06 / 28:35-28:40 Again Kathy from behind in the TV version. Also a shot of the hands. No time difference
Alternative 28:08-28:12 / 28:42-28:46 A different frontal shot of Kathy. No time difference
28:20 / 28:55-29:02 Another wide shot with bare butt as Kathy is doused with gasoline. Donny moves to the side with the canister. 7.4 sec
Alternative 28:20-28:28 / 29:02-29:10 Oddly, both the grab for the flamethrower and the following close-up of Kathy use alternate takes. Uncut 0.4 sec länger
28:34 / 29:16-29:18 The next shot of Kathy starts a little earlier. 1.4 sec
28:43 / 29:27-29:32 Donny uses the flamethrower and Kathy starts to burn. 5.1 sec
28:46 / 29:35-30:30 After a short shot of Donny, the scene is already over in the TV version. Actually, this shot of Donny is longer, you can see the flames slowly dying out. To ominous music, he gradually enters the room. Kathy's torso is already burned black in the meantime. 55.3 sec
31:01 / 32:46-33:01 After screams are heard during the exterior shot of the house, the view of a charred victim inside is missing. Donny goes to her and slowly lifts her off the hook. 15 sec
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 39:25 / 41:25 "You're all bitches" has been redubbed to "You're all witches." Interestingly, this happens in a TV-exclusive scene. So it wasn't a matter of course that Arrow/Severin presents uncensored audio for this as well.
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 60:42 / 62:42 Bob talks about the evening plans. Theatrical Cut: "I got all the calls made, my ass is covered" Severin Blu-ray: "I got all the calls made, OK, and I'm all covered"
64:11 / 66:11-66:18 After Donny accepts the salesman's offer for the choice of a complete suit, there is a little comment from the salesman: "Great, just come this way. I can make a new man of you in no time." They both walk away to the side. 7.5 sec
Alternative 64:22-64:23 / 66:29-66:35 The TV version prefers a re-cut to an employee (Alfredo) here. Thus, another comment of the salesman is suppressed: "It's specially made for dancing, there's elastic thread in the seams. You'll look terrific in this." Uncut 5.4 sec longer
64:28 / 66:40-66:58 The consultation is a bit longer and thus there are more homosexual hints to see. Donny: "I'll try them on at home." Man: "Well , fine. We'll get you a new pair of shoes then , shall we? Alfred? Could you fix this gentleman up with a pair of 1432s, please? Oh, your size, sir?" Donny: "I don't know. Nine, I think." Man: "Measure him , Alfred" 17.8 sec
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 69:44-69:49 / 72:14-72:19 Shortly after another a "Holy shit!" was changed to "Oh, geez!" and "(Hey you) motherfucker" was muted.
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 70:26 / 72:56 When Donny gets into the care, Bob's "(Hey) you sick son of a bitch" was muted.
About a minute later, by the way, the drunk girl only uses the harmless expression "Ah, geez!" in any version of the film. Usually this is a common substitute for the more obscene "Jesus!", but not in this case. Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray 73:34 / 76:05-76:06 The girl (Patty) comments to Jeff a little more detailed: "Oh, he's this real asshole." 1.7 sec
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray / Audio censorship 75:08 / 77:39 As the girls entered the house, a "Jesus!" was rather rudely chopped off to a "Gee!" by Suzanne.
Identical to Scorpion Blu-ray 81:42 / 84:13-84:15 Bob additionally exclaims "Holy Christ!" 2.2 sec
