Israel's Culture Minister Asks for Censorship

Filmmakers Shouldn't Criticise the State

Israel's Culture and Sports Minister Limor Livnat said last week that she's not disappointed that the documentaries The Gatekeepers and 5 Broken Cameras didn't win an Oscar. Too many films would have drawn a bad picture of Israel.

However, this statement did not cause the little outrage that currently infuriates the internet community in Israel. What did was the minister's attitude saying that not the things that are criticised are bad but the coverage of them is. Even though she doesn't want to censor the filmmakers, she wishes that they'd censor themselves and stop reporting about injustices within the country once and for all.

I, who oppose censorship, call on [Israeli filmmakers] to [engage in] self-censorship [...] After all, Israel is a democracy to be proud of, but a democracy that is on the defensive, because lined up against ’5 Broken Cameras’ are thousands of families that have been destroyed by Palestinian terror.” (Source)
