Sony Starts Clean Version Initiative

Authors Can't Wait to Get Their Hands on Those

In order to keep the authros busy, Sony is about to release so-called Clean Versions. People who buy the uncut and uncensored versions will also have the option to download a censored version for planes for US TV via iTunes etc.

Apparently, there is a huge market for movies that have been freed from violence, sleaziness or profanities because several providers (such as ClearPlay and VidAngel) have been offering censored versions for years now and Sony wants a piece of it as well.

As long as the uncensored version is still available, it is no big deal at all. It is rather curious though. Plus one should always keep in mind that most filmmakers do things a certain way and if someone only gets to watch a censored version, it might give the viewer the wrong impression. This also reflects on the filmmakers even though it is not their fault whatsoever. For instance, Seth Rogan said on Twitter he was hoping his movies (especially rather harsh R-rated comedies such as The Interview or Sausage Party) will remain untouched.

Here is a list of the first 24 Clean Versions by Sony. There is a little bit of everything: Thriller, action, fantasy, comedy and romance. With Goosebumps, there is even a movie among them that was rated PG in the US and further alterations were required for Sony's Clean Version. The original Ghostbusters (1984) is also rated PG but those were the good old days. Today, it would probably get a PG-13.

The first 24 Clean Versions by Sone:

  • 50 First Dates (PG-13)
