The Fate of the Furious - Censored in UK Cinemas

BBFC 12 Rating Could Only be Achieved by Cuts

Since this week, The Fate of the Furious can be seen in UK cinemas and many fans buy their screening tickets in delight. However, that delight is somewhat dim because UK cinemagoers don't see the film in its uncut form. While the movie has its obligatory PG-13 rating in the US, the British ratings board would have given it the BBFC 15 classification in that form. It was only after cuts that the studio's desired BBFC 12 rating could be reached.

The BBFC has the following to say:

During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

This film was originally seen for advice. The company was informed it was likely to be classified 15 uncut but that their preferred 12A classification could be achieved by reducing one scene of violence. When the film was submitted for formal classification, that moment of violence had been acceptably reduced and the film was classified 12A.

If we compare the UK running time to the German duration, approximately 30 seconds were cut out. Let's hope for UK fans that the home video releases will feature the uncensored version.
