Comparison between the Hong Kong theatrical version and the Extended Taiwanese Cut, both included on the US Blu-ray/4K UHD set from 88 Films

- 5 extensions
- Duration: 576.3 sec (= 9:36 min)

Project A remains an absolute classic among the titles that Jackie Chan shot in the 80s with his “brothers” Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. The German version was cut by two longer scenes, while the US version was specially cut by 8 minutes. More interesting for fans was the Japanese version with exclusive outtakes. These were included in the bonus material of the British Blu-ray by Eureka in 2018.

In the US, 88 Films has now released the worldwide 4K UHD premiere for October 15, 2024 – and thanks to the label shop's significantly earlier shipping, we are able to present the report for this release early. In addition to the well-known Hong Kong theatrical version, a Taiwanese version that is nine minutes longer is also included, also in 4K with HDR. This is somewhat reminiscent of the Mandarin Cut of The Big Boss with Bruce Lee, although the added material here is a little less spectacular. For the most part, the additional scenes in Project A were already known separately from SD sources, which were also included in the bonus material of the previous Eureka Blu-ray, for example. You get to see more little jokes between Jackie and his colleagues and a small show fight against Yuen Biao. During the undercover mission in the middle of the movie, it also becomes clearer that the two are enjoying themselves in the brothel on the side.

As we learned from label sources, 88 Films asked Fortune Star if they also have these bonus scenes at a guess, so to speak. Similar to The Iceman Cometh, for example, these scenes were fortunately also available in the archives in surprisingly good quality. Apparently, they only exist with Mandarin sound, which suggests that Taiwan was the region they were released within the actual movie at the time. In any case, it was not a complete cut from Taiwan that was available for reference, but these additional scenes were simply added to the known theatrical cut to create a provisional Taiwanese long version. Corresponding releases on VHS are not known. All in all, it's mainly a nice bonus and since the material fits in perfectly in terms of quality, this longest possible version, which also includes a few additional fight scenes, can be highly recommended to any fan.

As expected, the sequel Project A, Part II is also included in the set again, with the shorter export cut as a bonus. An additional execution scene was found in the Japanese trailer (at 1:13), but no corresponding release with this material is known worldwide, so even the new 4K edition from 88 Films could not help here. The alternative credits of the Japanese version are now included on the disc. They were missing from the previous Eureka Blu-ray, but were already included in the bonus material on the German Blu-ray.

By way of introduction, here is a small image comparison with the Blu-ray from Eureka in the UK, which has been used as a reference so far. The colors in 88 Films are now a little more natural and, especially in the explosion shown as the penultimate image, the increase in detail is obvious even at the highly compressed screenshot size. In addition, the image on the 88 Films release offers a little more information on all sides.

In addition to this little comparison, here is the sad age-old master on the German Blu-ray shown at Caps-a-holic. But that's not what the following report is about.

After Yuen Biao apparently had Mars shot, the theatrical cut continues with the nightly wake-up call in the dormitory. In the extended version, dinner with our heroes in uniform follows instead. Jackie pretends to mourn Big Mouth (aka Mars), who is still alive, of course. He makes the others believe that Mars is haunting them as a ghost if debts are not paid. When Mars enters shortly after, they are naturally frightened and there is some discussion about the money collected.

Jackie: “Big Mouth, rest in peace. We'll remember you forever.”
- “Amen.”
They start eating and Jackie says: “How can you still have an appetite?”
- “We don't.”
Jackie: “Even if we don't eat, it won't bring Big Mouth back.”
He eats briefly and then states the reason for taking a bill out of his uniform: “Big Mouth, I owed you $5. Now I give it back to you.”
Jackie briefly observes the reaction of the others; “Right, I don't owe you money now. Please don't haunt me as a ghost.”
More donations come from several sides; “I owe him $5, too.”
- “Me, too.”
- “Here's your money. We're even now.”
- “Don't come looking for me now.
Mars enters and Tai Bo notices him; ‘Oh, my! This isn't happening...’
The others haven't seen him yet: ”What's with you?”
This of course fuels Tai Bo's fear that only he can see the ghost because he has not yet paid; “Telling you won't make any difference! I needed the money...”
Tai Bo: “Big Mouth, it was me who took $10 from under your mattress. I didn't mean to steal from you, but I needed it. Here you go.”
- “So you were the thief! Big Mouth and I fought over that!”
He too now notices Mars; “Oh, my! This isn't real!”
Mars sits down at the table and Jackie says: “Big Mouth, they've actually treated you well. And they've paid all of your money back. I hope you'll rest in peace and be a good man, not a ghost.”
Mars: “Thanks, Brother Lung.”
Jackie: “Let's eat.”
The others complain: “You're not dead?! Lend me $10!"

Biao enters: “Why are you here after everyone has finished their meal? Think you're special? Go to your lessons now!”
Everyone has their mouths full and Jackie stammers out a dutiful reply before marching off in lockstep.
Finally, an additional shot of the sky.

The outdoor exercise is followed by a self-defense course, during which Jackie and Biao engage in a small duel. Biao throws his subordinates to the ground with relish during his exercises, and only Jackie puts up a valiant fight here. He teases Biao a bit about this and that rule.

Biao: “When we're on the beat, there's a chance of a sudden attack. So, it's important to practice grabbing fist techniques. I need three. Line up. Chokehold me. With strength!”
He stood in front of someone and quickly threw him over his shoulder.
He also finished off the next students; “Again! Attack with a fist. Well? Did you see that? Clean and neat.”
Tai Bo giggles.
Biao looks around: “You laughed again?”
Mars has to take the blame; “I didn't laugh! My mouth was born open! I really didn't laugh!”
Biao: “Come here, you. You're now the thief. Attack me.”
His fist movement is very tentative, so Biao simply reacts as if they were playing 'rock, paper, scissors'; “Paper. You lose. For real now."
With the next step forward, Biao pushes Mars painfully to the ground.

Jackie stands up.
Biao: “See that?”
Jackie: “Sir! Inspector, it's hurting him!”
Biao: “It won't work if it doesn't hurt.”
Jackie: “Isn't this torture?”
Biao: “According to the rules, an instructor can request his subordinates to train. You come up now. You're now the thief. Attack me.”
Again, Biao wants to pull Jackie's legs away, but Jackie dodges.
Biao: “I didn't say you could resist!”
Jackie: “If I were the thief, I wouldn't listen.”
Biao: “Right, now we'll do it for real!”
Jackie: “I was just acting on my instincts!”
Biao: “That's an order!”
Both now demonstrate some grappling positions, and in the end Biao is able to push Jackie to the ground.

Biao: “Now you're apprehended!”
Jackie: “Is this part of the lesson?”
Biao: “According to the rules, an instructor can test a student's physical strength. I'm testing you now!”
Jackie is able to free himself and now throws Biao to the ground herself. He wraps his legs around the head and when Jackie pushes him away, Biao's trousers even slip down.
Biao: “You're humiliating an instructor!”
Jackie: “Sir! According to the rules, I should overcome the test challenges! I'm acting accordingly!”
Biao: “Fine! We do it again!”
The bell rings and Jackie says: “Sir! According to the rules, instructors and students should obey the principal's orders. The lesson's over.”
Biao thinks about it for a moment; “Dismissed! Salute!”

After they have marked the boxes at night, you see Jackie and Sammo taking a bath in a brothel. Sammo quickly jumps out and slips into the towel provided by the girls. Jackie is a bit shyer and argues with him.

Sammo: “Hey, why don't you get dressed quickly?”
Jackie: “I'm embarrassed.”
Sammo: “Why? They've seen plenty of it already.”
One of the girls says: “Brother Fei, these new clothes are yours. Those are for your friend.”
Sammo sees her point and sends her out; “Fine. Go out. All of you, out.”
Jackie: “Hey, where are you going?”
Sammo, on his way out: “I'm gonna find the best girl for you.”

The theatrical cut also showed briefly how the baddies enter and Jackie gets out of the bathtub alone. Before the box is handed over, the extended version also shows a couple of baddies scurrying into the next room. Jackie hears them and hides in the bathtub again. After they have searched the room without success, he reappears. After that, you see the bald guy briefly go into the next room, where Sammo is also waiting.

- “So many guns be hidden in this place?”
- “Still, we should do a routine search.”
- “Look over there.”
- “Nothing.”
- “I already knew there would be nothing. Let's get outta here!”
- “All of you, search around here.”
- “Nothing.”

In the theatrical version, the scene ends with a shot of Jackie looking down from above.

In the Extended Version, a guy comes out from behind Jackie and a small fight ensues. Sammo breaks it up, but Jackie is still angry at him and just walks away when Sammo wants to embrace him as a crony.

Guy: “Hey! What are you doing?”
Jackie: “Can't you see I'm peeping?”
Henchman: “Guards, come here!”
Sammo: “Don't fight! He's with me.”
Johnny Chang: “Hey, you know who he is?”
Sammo: “Don't treat him like that. He's my partner.”
Johnny: “Don't you know he's a cop?”
Sammo: “He's a thief now.”
Johnny: “Would he rat us out?”
Sammo: “If you don't trust me, we can stop the transaction. Others are lining up to buy these guns. Actually, you have nothing to fear. This is your turf. Even if I cheated you , I wouldn't be able to get away from you.”
Johnny: “All right. I trust you. Let's go.”

The two talk briefly. Then the prostitute that Sammo organized for Jackie suddenly arrives. Sammo says Jackie should have fun with her now, otherwise it would look suspicious in front of the gangsters.

Jackie: “You nearly sabotaged me!”
Sammo: “Hey, watch it. It's an expensive vest.”
Jackie: “They're not a good bunch, why sell the guns to them?”
Sammo: “Would a good bunch buy these guns? Would you rather I sold them to the cops?”
Jackie: “They'll kill you as soon as they get the guns!”
Sammo: “I already predicted that. Also, you-- Who's that?”
To the girl: “Why did you come so late? Come here. This is my good friend. Look after him. Her name is Lovely.”
To Jackie: “Don't hesitate anymore. There are guards outside. Just get a good rest.”
He says goodbye; “Take good care of him!”
Jackie: “Where are you off to?”
Sammo: “I need to look for my lovely.”

Alone with her in the room, Jackie is naturally even more reserved. But then he opens up to the girl and hopes that she can deliver a message to his superior. However, he soon realizes that she is mute. Jackie doesn't know sign language, so he takes a deep breath and whispers everything to her again.

Jackie: “Miss, are there many guards outside? Do you know a way out? Can you do me a favor? Tell Captain Shih at the station that there are guns buried at the pier under a log wrapped with a red cloth, stolen from the station. Tell him to go! Do you understand? Let me hear you say it. You're... a mute? You heard what I said? Here.”
