Suicide Squad Will be Rated PG-13

Dark Comic Movie With Family-Friendly Rating

On August 5th, 2016, another comic adaptation from DC Comics will enter US cinemas: Suicide Squad. It stars Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, among others. The film provokes discussions especially regarding Leto's role as The Joker. A lot of speculation also surrounded hopes for an "R" rating and considering the dark nature of the original material and the recent example of Marvel's Deadpool that wasn't all too unthinkable.

However, producer Charles Roven talked to Collider and ended all speculation and said that they aim at the PG-13 rating.

“The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”

Not that much of a surprise, unfortunately, and a PG-13 allows at least for some sort of dark interpretation  of the material. But will it give the fans what they truly want? We'll see once the film is released and reactions can be observed. Right now, hardcore fans say that the studio opted for the creative suicide instead of a financial one.
