Welcome to New York with Alternate Cut in the UK Director Abel Ferrara wasn't delighted at all about the censorship that was forced upon his film Welcome to New York in order to secure the MPAA's "R" rating. The US is tricky territory for films that are heavy on the sexual context and Ferrara's film offers plenty of sex and nudity. But while the US will for now have to deal with the censored version, the UK is a big step ahead. The Blu-ray that gets released in England on October 20th, 2014, will not only contain the theatrical version but also an Alternate Cut. The only version that the BBFC lists so far is 125 minutes long and received the BBFC 18 rating. In Germany, a version with 120 was rated some months ago and received the "FSK 12" classification. Even though the Germans aren't so tough on sex in movies, it remains to be seen whether that is a more harmless version closer or identical to the "R"-rated version considering that the film also contains a rape scene. The Hamburg Film Festival is currently screening a version with 125 minutes. Once the UK Blu-ray is out, we'll see what we can do to get some structure in this mess. You can order it at Amazon.co.uk.
