Comparison between the TV Version as broadcasted on the 2nd of May 2013 and the Producer's Cut, taken from the US Blu-ray by Lionsgate.
- 6 alterations
- No difference in running time
Although there were no indications during the broadcasts, and despite very explicit scenes that could be seen on TV, the advertisements for the home cinema release of this very recommendable series hinted at missing elements: "Unrated episodes featuring content that was cut for broadcast" were, for example, promised for the US release.
Five of the episodes are marked as "Producer's Cut" in the inlay and menus of the BD and are indeed different from the TV versions. However, there are no differences in running time, which means that it will be impossible to judge the contents of further releases on just the length. At least it can be said that all these changes are actually removed censoring and NOT the addition of scenes that were taken out of the episodes in order to tighten them up. These are all the episodes with alterations:
1x10: Buffet Froid
Episode six (Entrée) is about a killer who gouges his victims' eyes out. For the scenes in which Will Graham imagines the happenings in a quite graphic way, the network pulled the brakes. Some rather small shot shortenings and the use of a bit of harmless alternative footage was enough to make the episode broadcasteable. The most distinctive shots of the Producer's Cut are an additional close-up from the side and especially the gory end of the scene.
By the way: the UK BD was released a few weeks earlier but only contains the censored versions of the episodes.
During the flashback at the beginning, the angels from episode five can be seen again, once covered in blood, once revealing their behind.
The TV Version shows the nurse a few frames longer (no pictures).
The Producer's Cutoffers an additional shot from Will's perspective instead, he squeezes the nurse's head.
Producer's Cut 1 sec longer
TV Version longer
The following shot of Will is longer in the TV Version.
+ 1 sec
The first shot is 1 sec longer in the TV Version, then Will can be seen. The Producer's Cut changes to Will directly (but only the latter part of the shot), then there is an exclusive shot from Will's perspective, in which the woman is already suffering more. A completely new close-up from the side follows.
The pictures only show the exclusive shots of the versions.
Producer's Cut 0,2 sec longer
The shot is longer in the Producer's Cut. Will removes his hands and the gory result of his actions becomes visible.
The TV Version shows Will removing his hands from a more harmless perspective. Then there is a cut to the woman, in which she is lying sideways and only one of her eye sockets can be seen.
TV Version 0,5 sec longer
She writhes a bit longer on the ground.
