Comparison between the theatrical version and the Easter Egg version (both included on the German Blu-ray by Koch Media)

- 6 cuts
- Cut duration: 100.2 sec (= 1:40 min)

In 1989, Eric Red directed Cohen & Tate, a gripping action thriller in which a 9-year-old boy skillfully pits two hitmen against each other. Roy Scheider and Adam Baldwin can be seen in the (original) title-giving roles, handmade shootouts keep the genre's viewers happy. Exactly these were the reason for discussions among fans for a long time, because it is known that the film had to be censored for the R rating.

After no digital release was available even in the US for a long time and was only released in 2011 by MGM in the US as DVD-on-demand, the 2013 Blu-ray by Shout! Factory was a small revelation. In addition to the HD master of the main movie, the bonus material included almost 20 minutes of deleted scenes as VHS upscale. In addition to various action scenes, these contained both the opening scene and the finale with various additional violent peaks, which apparently did not pass the MPAA screening at the time.

The German Blu-ray premiere is available from Koch Media since December 12, 2019. And here is a little surprise, because besides the aforementioned deleted scenes there is a hidden "Easter Egg", turning out to be an additional version on the disc. You can reach it by pressing twice to the left in the menu of the item "Gelöschte und erweiterte Szenen" (meaning "Deleted and Extended Scenes"). Then the movie starts automatically in a slightly longer version where only the violence cuts from the bonus segment have been inserted into the HD master. The picture quality drops accordingly in these moments, but at least this way you can see the scenes integrated into the movie for the first time.

The runtimes are ordered as follows: Theatrical version on German Blu-ray / bonus version on German Blu-ray

Alternativ
10:05-10:06 / 10:05-10:06

In the theatrical version, the shot with Tate's gunshot is 7 frames longer. But in the Unrated version the next shot starts earlier and you see the resulting hit earlier.

Unrated 0,2 sec longer

Theatrical VersionUnrated

10:12 / 10:12-10:24

The mother whimpers in the kitchen, which is followed by Tate, who shoots the father two more times into the stomach in bloody close-ups. The father stumbles to the window, where Tate puts the gun to his body again and shoots in close-up after a few counter-cuts.
Only then follows the fall out of the window to the outside, as it is known from the theatrical version.

12,2 sec

10:17 / 10:29-10:46

Another view from the inside, the window is bloodstained. Tate reloads and focuses on the mother, who screams again and crawls to the side and gets up earlier.
The Unrated easter egg version then switches to the rest of the shot known from the theatrical version right in the middle of it.

16,7 sec

79:45 / 80:14-81:18

Tate is hit for the first time in a slightly more distant shot. Spitting blood, he spins around in circles, followed by several more shots from Cohen. But in the meantime, Cohen is also hit and loses his gun, so that Travis pulls his handcuffs a bit to the side to reach them. The reloading doesn't work for Tate several times because the shotgun is bloodstained. Eventually, Travis grabs the gun and hands it over to Cohen, while Tate has reloaded and starts shooting.

64,7 sec (= 1:05 min)

79:58 / 81:32-81:38

A first shot of Cohen and Travis, then a view of the oil pump. It continues to rotate and is accordingly bloodied by Tate's squashed body.

6,2 sec

83:32 / 85:12

The head shot of Cohen, the near shot and the following shot at the end/beginning are a few frames longer, in which you can see the blood coming out.
