After the History Channel stopped doing real history documentaries and started focussing pseudo-scientific studies (UFOs and the like) as well as pseudo documentaries (Pawn Stars) which they achieve great successes with, they also tried out (mini) series. The Drama series Vikings is one of them. The first series was immediately able to win the audience over.

In the USA the channel aired censored versions of the episodes which often used alternate scenes. Thus there is no nudity, and some of the violence during the battles was toned down. However, the latter scenes are already quite graphic and only slightly censored here and there. In France they decided to air the completely uncensored version of the series.

The US Blu-Ray is uncensored but also offers a few additions to the plot. Whether or not these scenes were cut out for time reasons (so that the episodes are roughly 43 minutes long) could not be found out. We also do not know whether or not the scenes were included in the French broadcast. Thus this might be extended material which was saved exclusively for the Blu-Ray release.

The second episode on the US Blu-Ray is overall 3:20 minutes longer than the TV Version.

Siggi and Olafurl lie in bed a little longer. After all, Earl Haraldson has allowed it - or so it seems. The TV Version shows a short alternate scene.
BD: 15,5s | TV: 3.5s

Ragnar and Lagertha also like it rough. After they fought for a while he tries to get between her legs. The TV Version shows a short alternate scene.
BD: 6s | TV: 1.5s

Ragnar and Lagertha somehow make it up with each other. Lagertha still does not seem to be all to happy about it.

Rollo walks to the slave girl a little longer.

Rollo is shown for a short moment before he sexually assaults the slave girl.

He rapes her longer.

A longer plot scene is shown a Little later in the TV Version. Apart from that there is no relevant difference.

35:53 Attack on the Cloister

At this point a lot of short scenes were cut out where the vikings kill the monks. The scenes themselves are not all too explicit and since at other Points of the series more violent scenes were left in the TV Version the reason to why this sequence was censored might be because a lot of innocent People die.

A monk dies.

One gets killed with an axe.

Another person gets killed off-screen.

Another guy gets thrown to the ground ...

... and then beaten to death.

Rollo grabs a fleeing person in a side street and kills him. Another monk gets dragged around ...

... before he gets beaten to death.

Blood splashes against a cross.

Rollo kicks a monk who was hiding in the toilet until he dies. Rollo is obviously disgusted by the smell. The TV Version shows a short alternate scene.
BD: 22.5s | TV: 1.5s

Ragnar says that Floki torched the cloister. They both grin - seems to have been a productive day of work.

One of the captured monks flees and runs into the ocean. Rollo catches him again and almost drowns in the process.
