Twisted Metal: Black is a shoot'em up for the Playstation 2; the gameplay is similar to a Demolition Derby. You choose a vehicle and compete against other drivers by using ballistic weapons.
Unfortunately, the whole storyline was taken out of the European version. This is a comparison between the censored UK PAL version and the uncensored American NTSC version.
Main Menue
The menu item 'Movies' in the European version was replaced by the option 'Credits'.
Enemies After destroying an enemy vehicle, the drivers in the American version are either thrown out of their cars by an explosion or run out, burning and screaming. This was edited out of the European version. Images originate from the US version only:
Plane In order to open the entrance to a secret area, you in the US version have to shoot a plane which circles around the arena. After a few hits the machine starts to burn and falls into a building. The wrecked building is the entrance to the secret area. In the European version, the plane had already crashed and you can always enter. Images originate from the US version only:
Cutscenes Due to the fact, that the storyline was completely taken out of the European version, roughly one hour of video footage was deleted. The stories are usually divided in 3 parts:
Billy Ray Farmer 'Billy Ray' is disfigured because of a careless pilot who sprayed chemicals onto the field without realizing that Billy Ray was on it. When he returns to his farm he has to watch his wife having sex with the pilot. The pilot escapes while the farmer kills his wife with a heel. The operator of the Twisted-Metal-Tournament (Calypso) tells him that he will kill the pilot of Billy Ray should win....
As a reward, Billy Ray gets a private flying lesson with the pilot....
Preacher The schizophrenic preast thinks that he's possessed by a demon that tells him to kill people. Thus, he kills all attendees of a baptism. He thinks that he's innocent because the demon took control of his actions. He hopes that Calypso tells him the truth and frees him from the demon....
After the tournament, Calypso tells him that the demons are only part of his imagination. Thus, the priest kills himself....
Agent Stone During a SWAT operation, sharpshooter 'Agent Stone' loses control over his mind (he gets enraged) and shoots the subject - and a woman with her child. He hopes that Calypso will enable him to make up for his mistakes....
Mr. Grimm During the vietnam war, the soldier is captured along with his dead comrade's body. As a tortue, an officer jails him with his dead friend's body. All he gets is a knife so that he has to cut some meat out of his friends body in order not to starve. After the war - which made him a cannibal - the soldier asks for revenge which he hopes to acchieve by winning the tournament....
Winning the tournament is pretty delicate for Mr. Grimm: Calypso invites him to a "dinner for one" with the officer....
John Doe John Doe is a desperate man without any memory of his past. He thinks that he's a terrorist since all he remembers is a terror attack. When Calypso shows him an unknown picture of himself wearing buisnessman-clothing, John Doe definitively wants to know the truth about his past....
After the tournament - that made John Doe kill a lot of people - he has to find out a pretty heavy truth: Calypso tells him that he's an FBI agent who was injured while trying to defuse a bomb. He once was one of the good guys - but now there's blood on his hands. Calypso shoots him....
Noface After a smackdown, Bronx-boxer Noface is treated by an anesthetist. When he regains consciousness, he's missing more than just his eyes. Calypso offers him to take revenge....
Noface's reward is a special boxing training....
Bloody Mary The lonely murder named 'Mary' suffers from chronic jealousy. She never had a boyfriend or the opportunity to feel togetherness. She was always dismissed by all men while all the girls around her were able to get into a relationship. During a wedding she goes beserk and kills the bride. Calypso tells her that she'll never have to be alone again if she wins the Twisted-Metal-Tournament....
After surviving the 'Twisted Metal' Calypso gives her what she wants - a man. His brain was manipulated so that he does whatever Mary wants him to do. However, his mind is free and he tells her that he'll never love her. Thus she kills her husband....
Dollface The make-up artist's boss is an overwrought old man. When she incidentally drops a cup, he snaps, grabs a lockable mask and fixates it on her head with nails. Calypso offers her to get the keys....
As a reward, Dollface not only gets the keys but also her former boss. He's tied up in the middle of an iron maiden which is connected to the key with a chain-system. Dollface grabs the key and the iron maiden closes....
Raven After Raven (who believes in the occult) had to watch her soulmate girlfriend being drowned by 2 men, she wants to take revenge....
At the end of the battles, Calypso gives her 2 voodoo dolls for her to play with....
Mr. Kane and Son Mr. Kane's son is an above-average inelligent boy. After the father was killed by 'Sweet Tooth' - the son had to watch it - the child creates a machine to revive the father (more or less). Calypso tells the boy that everything will be good after the tournament.... All the special characters only have outros. This is the only one of these character to have an intro.
For winning the tournament, Calypso has his own way to make "everything good" again. He destroys the fahter's revival-machine and looks after the child, so that he one day will be his successor for the Twisted-Metal-Tournament....
Axel When Axel and his wife read a newspaper on a park bench, she suddenly disappears. 9 months pass by until the pilice finally finds all pieces of her body. They couldn't find the killer. If Axel should win, Calypso will tell him the murderer's name - in the end you find out that it's 'Sweet Tooth'. Alex takes revenge... All the special characters only have outros.
Cage The mass murderer loves to kill. However, he starts crying every time for no apparent reason. This annoys him immensely, thus he asks Calypso to take the part of his brain out which is responsible for him to feel sad. As a little extra, his hands are replaced by blades.... All the special characters only have outros.
Black Black is only interested in Calypso. He hopes to get a little closer to him by winning the tournament to finally eat his heart. However, Calypso is too clever for him.... All the special characters only have outros.
Sweet Tooth When the feared mass murderer 'Sweet Tooth' is jailed, the electric chair awaits him. A priest puts a hex on him for everything he did so that the flames of hell will burn on his forehead for all eternity. He's able to break out of jail and thus survives the execution. However, the burning pain gets worse and worse. Calypso tells him that he could undo the curse....
Sweet Tooth gets a bottle of blood from all of his victims. Calypso tells him that if he drinks it he will be free of the curse. However, he should never kill again, since the flames would return. Sweet Tooth needs less than 10 seconds to decide against it, since he has his priorities....
Loading Screen Because of the missing cutscenes, the studios decided to get rid of the loading screen as well. Therefore, all the texts that would evolve the story further (always fitting to the character you've chosen) were taken out. Billy Ray

Level 1 Can Calypso really the demon in me? Can He destroy the voice? If I win his game, will I be free? Level 2 Innocents will surely be sacreficed today. Many of my flock live here - Yet they surely understand why a man must free his soul. Level 3 The battles; the blood; the death. this contest is brutal. Level 1 I'm fooling myself if I think Calypso can undo the whrong that I have done. My crime was so heinous I cannot be forgiven. Level 2 It's hard to give up the past. It stays with you like a fever. It's the very thing that caused the accident. Level 3 I used to arrest people for playing Calypso's game. Look what I've become. I'm willing to murder others just to win. Level 4 minion won last year's contest. But I'm not afraid. If I can find a way past his force field I can beat him.
