The movie

Unlike William Friedkins cult classic from 1973, director Scott Derrickson stages most of the story of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" inside the courtroom where the dedicated lawyer Erin Bruner tries to defend Father Moore who is charged with murder. He tried to exorcise the possessed Emily Rose but now has to answer for her death. The events are brought to the viewer mostly in flashbacks.

So what we have here is a mix between courtroom drama and horror movie - whether or not this is a good mixture is up to the viewer. The actors all know their job and the film was somewhat successful despite the film "Exorcist: The Beginning" that was was flop not too long before.

The Extended Version

Is the new footage really worth a higher rating? Best known was an extended storyline sequence at court so the Unrated seemed to be a sham package at first.
However, a closer look reveals that the Theatrical Version is indeed considerably censored. Above all does this concern the photograph of Emily that is a piece of evidence in the courtroom. The Theatrical Version wasn't just cut but every single shot of the photo has been altered and the photo dyed black and white. Also, a lot of shots have been shortened and the difference neutralized by alternative shots of the same length. It seems that the studio planned to get the more profitable PG-13 rating for the movie and had to censor it according to the guidelines of the MPAA.
Due to the numerous changes made the Unrated Version does live up to its title more than people had thought at first.

The time indexes have been taken from the Theatrical Version and are presented in PAL as well as in NTSC.

"I have here a list of your published articles, doctor. You've been quite busy and prolific. So: Based on your time spent with holy rollers, snake handlers, voodoo priestesses and Indians tripping on Paoti buds and based on observing these bizarre individuals you've concluded that possession is a basic, typical human experience?"
Dr. Adani counters: "I must say, counselor, that's quite a laundry list of disdain. One that thoroughly mischaracterizes my research. No, I don't think possession is a typical experience. But I am convinced that it is a scientifically verified and culturally universal one."
Thomas: "Have you ever used Gambutrol in your studies, to test your theory about its effect on possession experience?"
Dr. Adani: "Absolutely not. That would be dangerous to the patient."

Thomas: "So this notion of Gambutrol locking someone in a possessed state and that somehow her medical treatment harmed Emily - this would be your own pet theory, correct? You're just making this one up."
Erin: "Objection, your Honor - argumentative!"
Judge: "Sustained, but I think you're just taking a page from your own book, counselor."
Thomas: "No further questions."
He steps back and Erin and Dr. Adani smile at each other.
