It seems fitting to continue with Cliffhanger after The Crow, as there are many similarities and both movies had to be cut extensively and especially visibly in order to receive the desired R-Rating in the US. Especially the scene in which Stallone shoots a bad guy through a layer of ice had to suffer, and its cuts in the International Version can be seen easily when paying attention. This is not very nice and also not typical for US censoring, whch is usually done better.
The uncut movie version of Cliffhanger has been discussed by for many years now, usually started by questions of buyers who bought the movie and are wondering whether they accidentally purchased the wrong version when noticing the cuts. Just a is the case with The Crow, a workprint of Cliffhanger can be found on the internet, but the quality is as always horrible. The recent 20th anniversary release of the movie can be seen as another missed chance to finally give the fans what they want. It can also again be said that, had Cliffhanger been made ten years later, it would certainly have received the unrated-treatment instantly. The continuing flow of rereleases seems to be still profitable, so why not maximize the results with a really new selling point by publishing this cult movie uncut for the first time? This should even be able to convince many mainstream viewers. Well, maybe we will have more luck with the 25th anniversary edition.
