Comparison between the TV version and the Extended Version

- 12 differences with 5 containing alternative material
- Difference: 174.6 sec (= 2:55 min)

As with all seasons of the cult series, only the TV version of all episodes was released worldwide on Blu-ray and in October 2024 as a 4K premiere. This is not unusual for buyers of the German DVDs, but those who know the DVDs from America or Great Britain will miss the extended versions contained on them.

Episode 5x02 (The One With All the Kissing) is another example where the extended version is well worth watching. With around three extra minutes, almost every scene is extended by a few brief moments, and there are even complete segments that were added.

00:31

After Chandler's explanation, there is a first reaction shot of Joey.
Chandler: “You're home early.”
Joey explains: “Yeah, my date threw up.”
He shrugs his arms and Chandler makes a grimace, too.

Joey's line about getting some chicken is then seen again in the regular version as well.

5.6 sec

In contrast to the version with the London footage in episode 1, the “regular” opening credits are used here. They are mostly identical, but a few individual shots differ or have a different framing.

01:48-01:50

Instead of the usual brief black screen moment after the opening credits, the extended version has an exterior shot as a transition.

Before Rachel comes in, Ross says about his little freak-out: “I'm sorry, I'm just a little...”
Monica interrupts: “Slow.”
Chandler laughs.
Ross: “Oh you want some?! Okay, get the shoes on! Let's go man!”
Monica: “It's cool, okay? You're the fastest!”

After Phoebe's short rant about London, Rachel continues: “I put on a cheerleading outfit to seduce Joshua. Then I lost him because I asked him to marry me after four dates. And then I went to Greece on somebody else's honeymoon. Okay? Do those sound like very good decisions to you?”
Monica tries to distract: “I like your little braid.”
Rachel: “All right. You know what? I just shouldn't be allowed to make decisions anymore.”

In the same shot, the dialog continues with “Phoebe, you were right.” (which also makes sense in the TV version to match her previous comment before the extended bit).

Alternative
08:05-08:07

In an alternative shot, Chandler says “We're sorry” to Phoebe. In the extended version only, Monica looks at the photos Phoebe took out of annoyance at the constant London stories.

Then Monica says in the Extended Version: “You know what I like to do? It's sounds a little corny but sometimes when I'm bummed out, I like to just close my eyes and think about what a wonderful gift life is.”
Phoebe closes her eyes and Monica quickly gets her photos back.
Monica: “See?
Phoebe opens her eyes again: ”Uh-huh.”

After Phoebe's “Well, it felt French,” Joey just makes a face in the TV version, and the screen fades to a shot of the skyline.

In the Extended Version, Joey says instead: “Well I guess it's time for me to say goodbye too, mon frere.”
He looks at Monica: “Come here and give me a little sugar.”
Monica pushes him away with her hand and Joey leaves the apartment. There is a soft fade to the skyline, but it is a different shot.

Extended 11.1 sec longer

11:53-11:54

Rachel says: “Come on I love you. Now, wasn't that nice?”
Monica says earlier: “No. (I make the decisions...)”

The shots of Rachel and Monica are therefore slightly longer at the end/beginning in the TV version, while the extended version has further re-ordered scenes between the two.

The typical black screen commercial break in the middle of the episode: This time the Extended Version has a small additional scene right at this moment, after Joey offered Monica his help in the hallway.
Rachel: “Ross, there's something I wanna talk to you about. I just need to..”
Monica knocks and calls out: “Rachel, open this door.”
Ross: “What, is it locked?”
Rachel: “She's fine. Listen...”
Monica knocks from the outside; “Rachel, I can do this all night if I have to!”
Ross: “You want me to get that?
Rachel: ”No. Y'know what? Just let her do her thing and we'll do our thing. Because I really need to tell you...”

The TV version offers a shot of Monica knocking on the door to rejoin the conversation, and Ross's subsequent shot begins a little earlier.

Extended 14 sec longer

14:15

Before Phoebe comes in, the scene at Central Perk begins earlier.

Rachel: “Hi.”
All: “Hey, Rach.”
Monica: “So did you find anyone that agrees with you, yet?”
Rachel: “No. But you know what? I think- I think I need a male point of view.”
Chandler leans forward, but Rachel says, “Joey.”
Chandler leans back again.
Rachel: “You're a man.”
Joey: “You got that right.”
Rachel: “Do you think it would be a good idea if I told Ross that I was still in love with him?”
Joey: “Nope.”

After Phoebe comments “I'm gonna go pack my ass off!”, Ross says: “Well, I think I'm gonna grab some coffee because my ass is already packed.”
Chandler and Joey look irritated.

Alternative version
20:46-20:51

In the TV version, Rachel and Ross hug a little longer, the picture freezes, and then there is a soft fade to the final scene.

The Extended Version switches to a different perspective, and then Ross and Rachel sit down.
Rachel: “Oh, God. I'm just glad I didn't give you the cassette I made of all of our songs.”
Ross: “What- what songs?”
Rachel: “Oh, you know: With or Without You.”
Ross: “Oh yeah.”
Rachel: “Everybody Hurts.”
Ross: “Ohhh yeah.”
Rachel: “Rhiannon.”
Ross: “Wh-why Rhiannon?”
Rachel: “Come on, you remember! In the living room? On Monica's laundry?”
Ross is irritated: “Not me.”
Rachel: “Really!”

Change of scene: Monica and Phoebe are packing things, Rachel joins them.
Monica: “So what happened?”
Rachel: “Well, it was really hard but..umm..I'm glad I did it.”
Monica: “So was I right or wrong?”
Rachel: “Oh, come on, honey, does it really matter?”
Monica: “No.”
Rachel: “Right?”
Monica: “Yes. I need it for my score book. Diary.”

Phoebe says in the extended version in response to Chandler's comment that she has to be taken to the hospital: “Okay. Well, there's probably one on the way to Atlantic City.”
The TV version has a different short shot of Phoebe without commentary instead.
