Compared are the heavily censored US TV Version and the German TV Version.
The anime series Sailor Moon should ring a bell. The 200 episode series about a group of girls, who can perform magic and fight Evil is a classic which left a mark in the awareness of Japanese Productions (in both directions). No doubt about that. The series was a major success worldwide. But the German Version is quite a surprise. In comparison to Saber Rider for instance, the German Version is based on the original Japanese master and the effort to keep it as close as possible to the Original was being made. Besides a few modifications (please see below), the German Version is equal to the uncensored original Japanese Version. The US North American Version however is a different matter. The company DiC was calling the shots for the adaption of the first two seasons and Cloverway for the following two seasons. The final season 5 - "Sailor Stars" - has never been released in the US, probably because of the controversial "Sailor Starlights", which also change the gender during their transformations. The realization is legendary, but for all thw wrong reasons. It's a perfect example for heavy censorship in animes these days. After the horrors of the first season, everyone expected the worst... and it happened. DiC also created an absurd broadcast schedule. They first released 2/3 of the season (with the first 13 episodes for some reason put at the end of the broadcast) and then waited for almost three years before they bothered to do the remaining episodes (that's because they'd had the insane idea to just do 65 episodes for sydication, regardless if the story is done or not). It's also worth being mentioned that the German Version was being modified here and there, too. Zoisite e.g. is a woman as well (I guess the channel changed that) and attempts to avoid words like "kill", "die" etc. were being made, which causes an odd result in some scenes. But still: these modifications are pretty harmless in comparison to the DiC Version. Comparisons of the dialog with subtitled Japanese episodes prove how close to the Original the German dialog is. Only the comparison of the first episode of the second season (episode 47) mentions the differences of the opening and final credits, the title of the episodes, the preview of the next episode and the "Sailor Says". All these elements are being ignored in the calculation of the different lengths. Basically, cuts and modifications are the two issues that might have happened. Sometimes it's only one of them, sometimes both at the same time. The time index is based on the German Version. Episode 83: Legend of the NegamoonThe group has finally managed to enter the future, only to be greeted by a horrible sight: Crystal Tokyo is in ruin. Suddenly the hologram of Endymion, Mamoru's future self ang of Earth, appears. Mamoru is quite angry when he learns it was Endymion who had caused him so much trouble with Bunny with these nightmares. Endymion then explains the situation: how the Black Moon attacked from Planet Nemesis and that now everything is in danger. Bunny is quite surprised to learn, that not she will be Neo-Queen Serenity, but that she also will be Chibiusa's mother. However, Prince Diamond has also seen the connection and kidnaps her in his fanatical longing for Serenity. Diamond tells her under no terms that if he can't have the future Serenity, the past one will also do. Thankfully, Tuxedo Mask can rescue her before Diamond could do the unspeakable. Bunny is horrified to have such a powerful stalker after her. Length German TV-Version: 19:00 Length US-TV Version: 17:44 The US TV Version lacks 1 Minute and 16 Seconds of footage. Generally about this episode First off it has to be noted that this episode clearly had been deifficult for DiC, which shows in the number of cuts. The actions of Diamond towards Bunny (not to meantion him changing her clothes) causes quite dark associations. Even apart from that, the episode got plucked heavily due to the number of cuts. Additionally, DiC again got into trouble since they had not used Endymion's name. They therefore got the brilliant idea to call Mamoru's future self "King of Earth", which sounds as stupid as it is. [00:18]-[00:23] [-5 Sec.] Shortened Scene Right at the beginning a zoom to Tuxedo Mask is missing, as well as the following look at a crystal structure with the Moon in the background.
[00:50]-[00:56] [-6 Sec.] Shortened Scene We see a view of the frozen-over palace gardens, then the picture pans to the side until reaching the road (we again see the Senshi apppearing out of the mist).
[01:01]-[01:06] [-5 Sec.] Shortened Scene The Senshi look around longer.
[03:24]-[03:28] [-4 Sec.] Shortened Scene Sailor Moon agrees to follow Endymion, while there's a zoom to her face.
[03:32]-[03:34] [-2 Sec.] Shortened Scene They chose a very bad place for a digital scene transition here. In the original, there was no transition. Instead the background simply faded to move from the real Sailor Moon to her hologram on planet Nemesis, which was seamless. The effect got lost with the new transition.
[05:03]-[05:07] [-4 Sec.] Shortened Scene Endymion causes a pentagram to appear on the floor. Probably got cut because DiC thought of it as satanic, Questionable decision due to a number of pentagrams appearing in earlier episodes.
[05:43]-[05:45] [-2 Sec.] Shortened Scene The prentagram is cut again.
[06:13]-[06:18] [-5 Sec.] Shortened Scene The third time the pentagram is cut.
[07:45]-[07:47] [-2 Sec.] Shortened Scene The pentagram for the last time, right before it disappears.
[08:36]-[08:39] [-3 Sec.] Shortened Scene Sailor Moon is not exactly happy about the fact that she is supposed to become Neo-Queen Serenity.
[10:08]-[10:13] [-5 Sec.] Shortened Scene Sailor Mars can't believe that Bunny of all people is supposed to rule the entire world, while Moon and Mask are still blushing after the news that Chibiusa is their future daughter.
[13:36]-[13:39] [-3 Sec.] Shortened Scene Due to a digital scene transition, the original fade-out and fade-in got lost.
[14:58]-[15:04] [-6 Sec.] Shortened Scene Diamond touches Bunny at her shoulder, causing her to flinch away. Disgusted, she rejects Diamond.
[15:35]-[15:38] [-3 Sec.] Shortened Scene Tuxedo Mask flies over the destroyed city in a hang glider.
[15:51]-[15:56] [-5 Sec.] Shortened Scene Diamond wants to force Bunny to kiss him, but she resists.
[18:44]-[19:00] [-16 Sec.] Shortened Scene The final scene of the episode is missing. Tuxedo Mask holds Bunny in his arms in the frozen-over palace gardens. They are kissing until it starts snowing. The sudden coldness reminds them that their mission is not over yet.
