So Folks, it must be said with all malice: If you don’t like the censorship policy in this country go have a look what censorship means in the US. When they grab the scissors you can bet that this will result in a cut festival and not only a little…

An especially demonstrative example is this in its original version strong entertaining sequel of the completely brainless first part PSYCHO COP. Everything what didn’t work there is now out of the first part’s class. Responsible for that are two persons: director Adam Rifkin (alias Rif Coogan) and screenwriter Dan Povenmir – both replaced the ungifted Wallace Potts who had both functions in personal union and with balls to the walls screwed the first part up. Adam Rifkin (his last flick has been HOMO ERECTUS aka NATIONAL LAMPOON’S STONED AGE) may the fans be known with his best directing of THE CHASE – HIGHWAY HEAT (Charlie Sheen, Kristy Swanson) and DETROIT ROCK CITY (Edward Furlong). But also as screenwriter he refined MOUSE HUNT as well as together with Gavin Scott the Spielberg production SMALL SOLDIERS. Dan Povenmir made his debut with the script to this flick and still is on duty for animated hits like FAMILY GUY and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. Together with the actor of the leading role Bobby Ray Shafer (who also produced this time) they created a Slasher which certainly doesn’t take itself seriously. This starts right with the credits („another Rif Coogan adventure“) where Psycho Cop decoratively presents the collected body parts in his car, continued by jokes reduced to absurdity (e.g. there is a male scream queen this time) ending up in the end credits where good-humored actors perform a closing dance. In addition at the end an (at that time) up-to-date news get satirized (Rodney King who gets basted from 2 Cops. This had been filmed on camera and shown on TV resulting in the most serious racial riots!). Also successful the classical mélange of Sex & Violence presented with a twinkle in one’s eye. Also refreshing that the Cop this times move from the countryside to the City and most of the victims are Yuppies. Oh yes there is a lot more to detect! For a little snack in between definitively a recommendation!

So far PSYCHO COP RETURNS has been released on DVD only in the US – but drastically censored as rated-R version. Not only that every murder has been cut but the much-loved sex games respectively Tits & Asses have been removed. In some cases only frames but in total about 5 and a half minutes have been cut. So the American fan isn’t to be envied. Compared has been the unrated Canadian Version (VHS, Alliance Video) with the US-DVD (Moonstone, Rated R). Naturally the frames are in a bad shape but to get an impression it should be sufficient.
