The Metal Slug series exists since 1996. Besides the regular games for the arcade they also produced several home console versions as well as games for smartphones and portable consoles. The gameplay can be compared to Contra, thus it is a Run'and'Gun shooter, however, sticks out due to its 2D graphics and the faithfulness to retro gaming.
You slip into the role of members of the special unit Peregrine Falcon. You have to use all your skill and firepower to defeat a rebel army, their leader and aliens in order to win the game.
Overall, the game uses comic animation, however, when killing the rebels, the use of blood is pretty astonishing. Due to the violence, there also exists a censored US Version that no longer uses red blood but rather "white splatter". Nowadays, almost all versions are uncensored - seems as if the censors were a little more critical at the end of the 20th century.
Here are a few screenshots of death animations. We chose different levels for the comparison in order to make it clear what has been changed. The animation was not altered, thus it was still clear what was coming out of the people, however, when colored red, the splatter is more noticeable as you will see. The zombie-like creatures originally bled red and not purple. Also, the Nazis' swastikas were turned into regular crosses.
