The R-Type series is a very popular space shooter series which revolves around the destruction of the evil alien Bydo-empire along with Bydo himself as its boss. The numbered main series covers three parts (excluding other scions). The third part was released solely for the SNES (the GBA-version is being ignored by almost everyone due to an awful porting) and impressed the fan community with many imaginative effects and innovations.


One could assume that Nintendo of America would not find anything to complain about in such a space-shooter. Right? RIGHT? ..... WRONG!




Compared were the uncensored Japanese version and the censored version which was released all over the world.

Altered Stage2 Boss

Nintendo of America was bothered about the boss of level 2 and made Irem, the team of programmers of R-Type III, change him.

The original version, which is only available in Japan, shows the boss of the organic level firing missiles that look like giant sperms. Whatever the reason may have been, but Nintendo seemed to consider that obnoxious and demanded alterations. In the American version and therefore also in version sold worldwide, the giant sperms became big eyeballs.

It must be remarked that this censorship is totally ridiculous and exemplifies pretty well the paranoid censorship restrictions of NoA at the beginning of the 1990s.
