Comparison between the Unrated Version (Disc 2) and the Extended Easter Egg Version (on Disc 1 with the theatrical version), both included on the German Blu-ray Mediabook by Plaion
Censorship History of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE IIIWith Leatherface, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series entered its third round in 1990. There is certainly much to criticize about the film, but in terms of censorship, it has always been an interesting case. The R-Rated version was heavily censored, cutting around 4 minutes. While in European countries like Spain, a significantly longer version was released on VHS, US rights holder New Line at the time engaged in a real battle with the MPAA. The MPAA initially gave Part 3 the infamous X-Rating, which was replaced by an NC-17 rating later the same year. With many more alterations against the wishes of director Jeff Burr, they ultimately achieved the R-Rating. The US Laserdisc was Unrated and considerably longer than the theatrical version but still censored during the hammer scene. Finally, in the US, the uncensored Unrated version became common on DVD. The UK and other countries followed suit. In 2018, the uncensored Unrated version was also released on Blu-ray in the US. What was fascinating for fans was the existence of a rough cut (report) that was almost 10 minutes longer. This included many trivial details, but also a few more violent bits and an alternative ending, which was notably darker. Fortunately, some of this additional material was discovered on the DVD/Blu-ray as part of the "We Knows What to Do with Them Parts" featurette, and the alternative ending was also preserved in better quality compared to the rough cut. German Unrated HD Premiere with a curious Easter EggIn October 2023, Plaion Pictures finally satisfied German enthusiasts by making the uncensored Unrated version available legally in Germany for the first time ever on Blu-ray in a mediabook format. A few exclusive dialogues in the Unrated material were dubbed into German, and the R-Rated theatrical version was also included in the release. Of course both versions contain English original audio as well. Additionally, the aforementioned bonus material (Deleted Scenes + alternative ending) is, of course, part of the package... ...but with this starting point, they went one step further and, on Disc 2 with the theatrical version, as an Easter Egg hidden in the bonus menu under "Alternative Ending," they included an extended version of the film based on the Unrated version. Only the alternative ending preferred by the director, as stated in the audio commentary, was incorporated. This ending was upscaled to HD quite nicely as well. It originally had no sound and was now "completed" using pieces from the original soundtrack to make it seamless. It's not a true Director's Cut, of course, but it likely comes much closer to it. One might wonder why this effort was not undertaken for the other "Deleted Scenes" from the rough cut, which are also part of the bonus material. However, these scenes are of considerably lower quality and, frankly, some of the effects here are not particularly done well. It's therefore possible that some of this material was intentionally disregarded even in the previous Unrated releases. A few screenshots of these scenes are also included for your reference. Ultimately, the Plaion release is highly recommended for any fan. It's available in the Plaion online shop. Runtime information is organized as follows: Runtimes: Unrated: 85:24 min (80:49 min) First, here's a look at the Deleted Scenes found in the bonus material, these provide further insights into the raw-cut footage. Although it looks better than the raw cut material circulating on VHS bootlegs, it is still of significantly lower quality than the alternative ending integrated for the Easter Egg version. Furthermore, the relevant material is frequently interrupted by interview clips with the crew, and due to the lack of a final sound mix, it is mostly accompanied by corresponding off-comments. Behind-the-scenes material is also occasionally seen. All in all, unlike the alternative ending, it really wasn't that helpful for possible further inserts.
76:03 / 76:03-76:04 A brief additional shot of Benny screaming in the water. 0.9 sec
76:05 / 76:06-76:08 Between a shot of Michelle and one of Leatherface, you can see Benny again. 2 sec
76:10 / 76:13-76:29 Benny slowly sinks while the chainsaw continues to revolve over the water and then sinks as well. 16.7 sec
Alternative 76:17-76:18 / 76:36-77:14 In the Extended Version, Michelle moves away from the shore and encounters Tex. This is followed by a brief fight in which Michelle manages to push Tex into a trap, resulting in his demise. Michelle continues to wander for a bit and observes his final moments.
In the Unrated version (which is identical to the theatrical release during this moment), there is an alternate shot of Michelle wandering at this point. In both versions, Leatherface emerges from the swamp and attacks her.
Extended Version 36.7 seconds longer 76:54-76:59 / 77:50 As Leatherface slowly sinks, the shot is briefly interrupted only in the theatrical/Unrated version by a close-up of the chainsaw, which had already appeared in the Extended version at 76:10 / 76:13-76:29. + 5.5 sec Alternative 77:04-80:49 / 77:55-80:49 In the Extended version, Michelle walks backward from the pond, collapses against a tree, and begins to sing, exhausted and desperate. The scene transitions to the next day, where Michelle continues to wander, weakened. Shortly after, a police car passes by, and she signals it to stop. As she approaches the car, she suddenly sees the little girl (Jennifer Banko) through the rear window. Michelle drops to her knees, laughs manically, and a sticker next to the license plate reads "Don't Mess With Texas."
In the Unrated version (during this scene it's identical to the theatrical release), there is instead a black screen and then a shot of the sun above the horizon. Michelle walks along a small path and sits on a car tire. A truck pulls up, with Benny (Ken Foree) inside. They embrace and intend to leave, but Alfredo suddenly appears and attacks Benny with his hammer. He shatters the window, and although Michelle can't grab the shotgun, she manages to push him away. After some struggling, she shoots him. She drives away with Benny, but Leatherface appears in the final scene, watching them.
Unrated/theatrical version 51.8 seconds longer During the (identical) credits, different songs are played. The song from the Extended version continues over a minute into a black screen, which accounts for the corresponding runtime difference. |
