US Blu-ray with the Spanish version |
The Italian version (Italian VHS from Esse Video) was compared with the Spanish version (US Blu-ray from Mondo Macabro).
Professor Popov has implanted a device called a Sexmaker in the hermaphrodite Eva, which enables her to completely control both her female and male sexual desires. The first tests are promising, and Eva meets – and falls in love with – the attractive Ajita. The impotent Gassonis is desperate to get his hands on the Sexmaker, as his unfaithful wife Gerda is unable to give him an erection. He instructs Popov's assistant doctor Seghezzi to steal the research documents on Eva and then sends two simple-minded henchmen to kidnap Eva. But instead of Eva, they accidentally bring back the maid Cristina. Since Eva runs a detective agency together with her partner Tony, she decides to take the case into her own hands. After Tony impressively learns that Eva has both male and female sex organs, Eva pretends to be kidnapped. But Gerda and her lover plan to remove the sexmaker with an axe. Now it's up to Ajita and Tony to save Eva at the last second. Eva Man is a remarkable film in many ways. Particularly noteworthy is the cast: with Eva Robins and Ajita Wilson, two trans women play the leading roles – and both are portrayed in a surprisingly positive and self-determined way, which was a rarity in European exploitation cinema of the 1970s. The plot is completely crazy and bursting with absurd twists and turns – from bizarre scientific experiments to kidnappings to grotesque erotic moments. However, it is these excesses that make the film so appealing. A curious sexploitation film – wild, provocative and a surprisingly progressive contribution to queer film history. Eva Robins is best known for her striking role in Dario Argento's giallo Tenebrae, in which she can be seen in the flashback on the beach. Eva Man is an Italian-Spanish co-production, for which separate edited versions were created. The Italian version contains explicit oral sex scenes when Eva seduces Cristina – these are missing from the Spanish version. These are not body doubles, but actually Eva Robins and Annj Goren in the role of Cristina. The Spanish version, on the other hand, contains two additional erotic scenes: in the first, Gassonis watches his wife Gerda making love and realizes with frustration that he is impotent; in the second, Gerda enjoys herself with one of her lovers in a meadow. For comparison, we had the Italian VHS from Esse Video and the US Blu-ray from Mondo Macabro. Both versions have a few short, material-related flaws. The Spanish version instead shows a still image of Cristina jumping into the pool. I suspect that a flaw in the Blu-ray was concealed here.
