93:29 / 114:07-119:16
After a short scene with Azog only the Extended Edition reveals Gandalf's walk through Dol Guldur: he es exploring it (this part is without pictures, as it comes later in the Theatrical Edition, see 104:08-104:46 / 129:22-129:34), then in a shot from below, someone jumps at him from above. It is revealed (after a spectacular fight and pursuit) that the hand from the earlier shot belonged to Thrain. After he has been calmed down, he tells Gandalf what had happened and talks about his son. Also, he explains the missing ring on his finger and the fact that he had been tortured by orcs but never told them anything. Gandalf: "Thrain? Son of Thror? My old friend." Thrain: "Gandalf? A lifetime. I have been here a lifetime." Gandalf: "I'm so sorry I gave you up for dead." Thrain: "I had a son." A short flashback to the battle, as Thorin says: "I will fight with you."
Gandalf: "Thorin. And you will see him again, my friend. Come, we must leave." They walk along the hallway. Thrain tells his story with short flashbacks: "The Orcs had taken Moria. War. We were at war. I was surrounded. The Defiler. Azog the Defiler had come." He notices his missing finger, on which he used to wear a ring; "They took it." Gandalf: "The last of the seven. Come on, let's get you out of here." Thrain: "There is no way out. They will stop you. The serpents will stop you." The exit is closed by some branches, and Gandalf says: "It's an illusion. Just an illusion. What have they done to you?" Thrain: "I never told them. They tried to make me, but I never said a word. Have you kept them safe, Gandalf? The map and the key?" Gandalf: "I gave them to Thorin. You'd be proud of him. He's taken up the quest to reclaim Erebor." Thrain: "Erebor..." Gandalf: "He will retrieve the Arkenstone. The seven armies of the Dwarves will answer to a new king." Thrain: "No. No. Thorin must not go near Erebor. No one must enter that mountain."
Total time 308,6 sec (= 5:09 min) Change in editing 93:29-94:01 / 119:16 Now we see in the Theatrical Edition, how Bilbo finds the entrance to Erebor. + 31,9 sec Change in editing / Alternative scene 104:08-104:46 / 129:22-129:34 Until Azog appears, attacking Gandalf, the two versions are quite different. In the Theatrical Edition we see the start of the previous longer scene block: Gandalf is wandering through Dol Guldur. The color filter is slightly different from the one used in the Extended Edition: the Theatrical Edition looks more foreboding. Interestingly, the shot of Gandalf from below ends just before the reveal of Thrain in the EE. This shows that the TE has been re-edited, whereas the EE shows the originally intended editing of the scene. In the TE we see Gandalf immediately after that (only this part has been illustrated by screenshots, as this material also appeared in the EE at a different time) standing alone, from above. Then he takes a few steps forward and casts a magic spell. After the resulting tremor, Azog appears.
The Extended Edition sets out with a hastily running Thrain, as Gandalf is warning him: "He is waiting for them. They are in league. The dragon and the One. Hurry. We must hurry." After that, Azog just attacks them from behind a corner.
Theatrical Edition 27,1 sec longer Digital Effect 104:48-104:50 / 129:35-129:37 Now it's rather interesting: the fight between Azog and Gandalf is basically identical in both versions (except for the differences mentioned later), however, we also see Thrain in the EE. Also a nice little touch: Gandalf is wearing his hat in the beginning of the scene in the TE only. Extended Edition 27,2 sec longer
104:53 / 129:41-129:42 A short additional shot of Thrain only in the EE. 0,8 sec
105:22 / 130:10-130:11 Once again, Thrain is only seen watching in the EE. 1 sec
Alternative scene 105:40-105:41 / 130:29-130:32 As Gandalf is running away from Azog, the EE uses two different shots which also include Thrain. Extended Edition 1,5 sec longer
Digital Effect 105:44-105:46 / 130:35-130:37 Gandalf is swinging his staff - and once again, only the EE has Thrain in the shot. No time difference
Alternative scene 105:53-106:05 / 130:44-131:00 Here we see entirely different takes, as Gandalf's hand protecting Thrain would look strange if he was just removed. The effects in the background also look different. Azog's line has been moved slightly back because of the additional shot of Thrain (see the subtitle placement). At the End, Thrain says: "He is here." Extended Edition 3,8 sec longer
106:06 / 131:01-131:21 After the identical shot of Gandalf, there is an additional scene with Thrain, saying: "Tell Thorin that I loved him. Will you do that? Will you tell my son that I loved him?" Gandalf: "You will tell him yourself." Thrain: "It is too late." After that he is drawn in by a shadow and apparently dies. 19,9 sec
Credits Slight differences in the credits to accommodate the additional actor only in the EE: Antony Sher (Thrain).
