Re-ordered scene

Ken walks around the room for longer, cursing and kicking food across the floor. Then he pauses for a moment and looks over at Lung. Lung also reaches for the frozen piece of meat a moment earlier.

At least a short part where Ken looks straight ahead is reinserted into the theatrical version shortly afterwards as an interruption of Lung's shot.

37.5 sec

52:03 / 71:28-71:35

Ho is seen a little longer and looks even more serious. Then some first shots of cars driving through the night.

7 sec

54:36 / 74:07-74:12

Re-ordered scene
56:22 and 56:31-56:33 / 76:48-76:50

Before Ho gets into the car, there is another shot from above – which also appears shortly afterwards in the theatrical version.

No time difference

16.7 sec

All releases of the theatrical cut since the VHS era have had a few artifically added blood splatters, particularly noticeable here at 64:09 / 85:33. When the guy falls back, a weird red spot moves roughly across his chest. The workprint was of course still unedited here.

Theatrical version (4K remastered)Workprint

64:53 / 86:18-86:19

After a relatively long section with basically no changes (only the familiar music starts a little differently during the shootout in the hallway), there is a short additional shot here in which a man approaches. This interrupts two slow-motion shots in which Ken kills a guy with several shots. Given the dynamics of the action scene, it is understandable that this shot was removed from the final theatrical version.

1.1 sec

In the two slow-motion shots mentioned above, there are again a few frames in the theatrical version that have been artificially supplemented with more blood splatters.

Theatrical version (4K remastered)Workprint

Another striking scene with a strangely enlarged blood cloud can be found in all releases of the theatrical version at 67:33 / 88:58.

Theatrical version (4K remastered)Workprint

68:08 / 89:33-89:35

Lung is seen insignificantly longer and Ken similarly insignificant earlier.

1.8 sec

68:12 / 89:39-89:52

Lung whines longer; “God damn it! Why... is it so difficult to be a good man?”

12.8 sec

The following scene is only shown in black in the theatrical version.

68:53 / 90:32-91:13

In the regular theatrical version, the others suddenly appear on the field from one moment to the next. In the workprint, you first see them arriving in the car, then running towards Lung and Ken. Ken thanks everyone, and it becomes clear once again that he and the others are orphans.

- “Brother Ken, your money and passport. Take them with you.”
Ken: “I'm leaving my restaurant to you. Do a good job. Treat it like your own home. Come back for soup sometimes. We're all orphans. We'd better look out for each other.”

40.8 sec

69:02 / 91:23-91:31

Ken turns around, says “I'll come back for the soup” and stubs out his cigarette.

8.5 sec

69:12 / 91:41-91:45

The car drives away a little further.

3.3 sec

69:35 / 92:07-92:09

Ho runs from the side to the house in a first shot.

2 sec

Re-ordered
69:49 or 69:52-69:57 / 92:23-92:31

A brief black screen, and so the workprint skips the moment when Ken turns to Lung and Ho. This comes a few seconds later, after Ho has looked at him in disbelief. In the workprint, the turning around and “I am Ken” happen in one go, while in the theatrical version it is interrupted by Ho's reaction.

Workprint 1.8 sec longer

70:06 / 92:43-93:09

Ho goes to Ken and in a short dialogue the relationship with brother Mark from part 1 is hinted at (still quite up for interpretation, but at least a little more explanation than in the theatrical version).

Ken: “Brother Ho.”
Ho: “Please excuse me.”
Ken: “For what?”
Ho: “You're wearing Mark's clothes. I really can't tell the difference.”
Ken: “Really? It makes me proud, too, that my big brother has a friend like you.”

The camera then pans to Lung, and the following scene outside by the gravestones begins a little earlier.

26.6 sec

70:12 / 93:16-93:17

The second shot in the cemetery (Lung steps in front of his daughter's grave) begins slightly earlier.

1.7 sec

70:15 / 93:20-93:21

The shot is also slightly longer.

1.1 sec

70:18 / 93:23-93:28

Additional shot of Lung, he bends down.

5 sec

70:30 / 93:40-93:47

The camera movement around Lung is slightly longer.

6.3 sec

70:38 / 93:55-94:11

Lung stands up again. He nods reassuringly to Ho and Ken. Kit now joins them (or, in the theatrical version, he suddenly appears out of nowhere without this introductory shot).

16.6 sec

70:44 / 94:18-94:19

The shot from above and slightly to the side is slightly longer.

1.4 sec

71:30 / 95:04-95:06

Kit looks after him a little longer.

2.1 sec

72:54 / 96:31-96:36

The motorcycle drives out of the picture a little longer and the follow-up shot in front of the taxi company starts a little earlier.

5 sec

73:35 / 97:18-97:33

Ho is still on screen talking about the deal with the buyer from New York and how they should take over headquarters. This dialogue was placed off-screen in the theatrical version during the following scene. They clink glasses and then the shot begins a little earlier, with Lung reaching for the orange.

Only during the scene transition does the workprint have a little additional dialogue - in which Ken again addresses his orphanage friends from the restaurant for support.
Ho: “Hey, we're short on manpower.”
Ken: “Rest assured, I have lots of staff at my disposal.”

15.4 sec

73:41 / 97:38-97:40

Lung looks at the orange a little longer.

1.9 sec

74:11 / 98:10-100:18

An additional scene in front of a hotel: Kit attacks (as just discussed) the buyer from New York. He pushes him into the car at gunpoint, and when his men in the white car behind want to give chase, they are blocked by red cars. Kit holds a gun to the American's throat and threatens him in English, but in the meantime also identifies himself as a police officer. They drive to a warehouse where a bomb is strapped to the American. Kit continues in English, saying that he has four hours. He and the other men run away and the American whimpers a little. There is some more dialogue (now back in Cantonese, reproduced here with English subtitles).

Ken: “What did you tell the white guy about when the bomb was set for?”
Kit: “Uncle Kin said four hours.”
Ken: “Uncle Kin said to me that it was set for two hours only.”
Kit: “Then he--”
They start laughing.
Someone asks: “Uncle Kin, what are we dressing up as next?”
Uncle Kin: “Dressing up? As taxi drivers, of course. Get back to work!”

127.8 sec (= 2:08 min)

75:51 / 101:58-102:28

As Ho and Ken use binoculars to observe what is happening with the bad guys, the previous scene is now resolved: The New Yorker comes running in panicked with the bomb strapped to him. There is a brief discussion about whether it is a fake and how to help him. Chong quickly rips the bomb off his body and throws it outside, where it immediately explodes. Ken and Kit laugh in their hiding place and give a thumbs up.

30.1 sec

75:57 / 102:34-102:39

Ho joins them inside and the follow-up shot begins a little earlier – the American is still waving his hands excitedly and Ko calms him down.

4.3 sec

76:12 / 102:54-103:09

More introductory shots for the scene in the shipyard: Baddies arrive.

15.3 sec

76:47 / 103:44-103:45

The bad guys chase the workers around a little longer.

1.1 sec

78:32 / 105:29-106:25

Ko talks to his people about the situation in a completely additional scene.

Ko: “An old buddy didn't die in New York. Now he's back looking to even the score with us. I won't dare to underestimate Lung Sei. He's very unstable emotionally. This is an advantage to us.”
Shing agrees; “That's right.”
Ko: “Tonight, we'll go supervise in person and complete the production.”

Afterwards, Kit rides his motorcycle down a street during the day. He stops briefly and thinks. Finally, he is seen riding a few meters in the evening.

55.9 sec

Re-ordered scene
78:50 and 79:48-80:05 / 106:44-107:12

Kit sneaks through the streets and toward the villa. In between, Ken and co. are in the car again.

At least the latter part, where he jumps over the wall and arrives at the villa, is reinserted in the theatrical version about a minute later (after the chase).

Workprint 10.5 sec longer

79:04 / 107:26-107:32

First shots of Ho and Ken in the car.

6.1 sec

79:22 / 107:50-107:59

More shots of the chase/shootout.

8.5 sec

79:29 / 108:06-108:11

Ditto, before another collision.

5.5 sec

Re-ordered scene
80:05 and 80:33-80:43 / 108:30-108:42

Kit continues to watch from his hiding place – these two shots are swapped in the theatrical version and reinserted half a minute later in a slightly shortened form.

Workprint 1.8 sec longer

80:43 / 109:10-109:14

At the point of the aforementioned cut, the workprint has an additional shot in which Kit looks down thoughtfully and then looks up again.

4 sec

80:53 / 109:23-109:34

Kit is visible for a little longer as he takes out his weapon.

10.7 sec

82:30 / 111:11-111:13

The close-up of the banknotes is followed by a brief shot of Kit in his hiding place.

1.4 sec

Alternative
83:37-83:39 / 112:20-112:22

In the theatrical version, the image freezes briefly when Kit is shot; the muzzle flash was added to the image here. In contrast, the shot in the workprint is longer at the end and you can see Kit stagger backwards after being hit.

No time difference

Theatrical version (4K remastered) Workprint

84:24 / 113:07-113:14

Only in the workprint can you briefly see Jackie holding the baby in her arms. Ho is sitting next to her.

7.7 sec

84:40 / 113:30-113:50

More dialogue between Kit and Ken. Unfortunately, this entire scene is very dark in the workprint, and without increasing the brightness on the TV, it is difficult to see the two of them here.

(Ken: “This time you really screwed up!”)
Kit: “The one we saw the other night...wasn't a firefly. It's a shooting star.”
Ken: “We're such good friends. Don't you just walk away on me. We haven't cracked the case yet. Ko Ying-Pui is still at large. You must hang in there until we get to the hospital.”

19.6 sec

84:50 / 114:00-114:02

Kit can be seen a little longer.

2.1 sec

85:06 / 114:18-114:38

After Ken emphasizes that Kit must take responsibility, he says: "It doesn't matter if it's only me. It doesn't matter if no one knows either. What matters is doing what's right for society, for the people, for myself."

Kit's first collapse in the same shot can also be seen in the theatrical version.

20.3 sec

85:25 / 114:57-115:11

Ken gets out of the car and drags Kit over to the phone booth.

13.6 sec

87:53 / 117:39-117:42

Brief frontal shot of Ken as Ho arrives.

2.5 sec

Re-ordered scene
89:11-89:15 / 119:00 and 120:09-120:13

The theatrical cut already shows a shot of the baddies here before the drive along with our four main characters. It comes a minute later in the workprint.

No time difference

Re-ordered scene
89:48-89:52 / 119:33 or 120:23-120:26

Before they drive up, there is another shot that comes later in the workprint.

No time difference

90:07 / 119:48-119:50

Here again, the workprint has an additional shot from the villa's doorway with the bad guys.

2.6 sec

90:16 / 120:00-120:03

Again, the theatrical cut stays with our heroes throughout, while the workprint inserts another tracking shot through the villa.

3.3 sec

90:22 / 120:13-120:14

Uncle Kin can be seen a moment earlier.

0.8 sec

91:05 / 121:00-121:06

Two additional shots before the bags of weapons are thrown over the wall: Ho touches the bloodstain and you can see the bad guys inside bumping into each other.

5.5 sec

92:12 / 122:12-122:19

More shooting outside before Ho throws the Molotov cocktail.

7.5 sec

92:17 / 122:25-122:33

Ho reloads and more shots of the chaos inside.

8.3 sec

92:18 / 122:34-122:36

The next shot of the three is a little longer and you can see more activity inside.

1.8 sec

92:22 / 122:41-122:45

More shooting.

4.5 sec

94:40 / 125:04-125:09

Since a large part of the brutal finale is identical (or, in the theatrical version, was thankfully not cut down compared to the workprint, which makes sense), here is an additional shot of Ken walking down the stairs.

5.5 sec

94:49 / 125:18-125:32

Ken puts his weapons away and examines the money closely.

14 sec

95:09 / 125:52-125:53

Exciting and perhaps deliberately censored: a slow-motion shot of gunfire begins a little earlier, and only at the beginning of this shot can you see a guy on the left of the screen with a severed hand or arm stump, from which a small fountain of blood is spurting. Only when this guy is obscured by another guy in front does the theatrical cut begin.

1.3 sec

95:11 / 125:55-125:58

Ken drops grenades a little earlier.

2.8 sec

95:15 / 126:03-126:05

Another slow-motion shot of attackers being hit.

2.3 sec

95:17 / 126:07-126:07

Ditto.

1.7 sec

95:18 / 126:09-126:11

The next shot is slightly longer (+ Ken a few frames earlier).

1.7 sec

95:23 / 126:16-126:21

Ken throws a grenade + a frontal shot of Lung and Ho.

4.5 sec

95:29 / 126:27-126:32

Before two more attackers come around the corner, Lung and Ho lower their weapons again and you see them from the side once more.

5.2 sec

Re-ordered scene
95:31 and 95:33-95:34 / 126:34-126:46

More shots are fired and Ho is hit again. Ko rushes past with his entourage and Ken throws another grenade with a grin. At least the brief moment with Ko was reinserted into the theatrical version shortly afterwards, briefly interrupting the shot in which Lung is shot by Shing Fui-on.

Workprint 10.9 sec longer
