The Lamp - An older Djinn story than WishmasterHoping to get a lot of old valuables, three burglars raid the secluded estate of an old lady. In a wall hiding place, they find a magic lamp from which an evil Djinn immediately springs and kills the burglars. For further investigation, the police sends the lamp to the natural history museum. The museum's director Dr. Wallace and his assistant Theo take a closer look at the lamp. When Alex, Dr. Wallace's daughter, puts on a bracelet, she unwittingly becomes the lamp's guardian. She convinces five of her friends to spend the night in the museum. They are secretly joined by Mike, who has not yet gotten over his separation from Alex. The Djinn awakens and kills the teenagers one by one.
Even before Wishmaster, The Lamp shows us a murderous Djinn who makes the wishes of his guardian a bloody reality. For long stretches, however, the film is a slasher with few surprises and some curious interludes. Between singing night watchmen and a nude bath with snakes is a completely out of place rape scene in which Mike tries to deal with his separation pain. The effects are good and the monster masks are well done. Especially at the end when the Djinn appears, the film is really fun.
R-Rated Extended Version on Vinegar Syndrome Blu-rayThere are different versions of The Lamp, which was released in the US as The Outing. The original US version lacked the prologue on the ship that was included in international versions. For the US Blu-ray by Shout Factory, the prologue was added back in. On the US Blu-ray by Vinegar Syndrome, there is again a longer version that includes additional plot scenes that have never been seen before in any other version. These are mostly without much added value. In one scene, you can see Mike and Tony using drugs, which could at least explain their behavior a bit.
It should be noted that the international version of the film has additional violent scenes that are missing from both the Shout Factory Blu-ray and the Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray.
Runtimes:
Shout Factory: 88:55 min.
Vinegar Syndrome: 91:42 min.
