When the movie was first released on DVD it was a sure thing that it will be re-released as an extended version as well.
In contrast to various other extended versions „Der Untergang“ earns a lot of profit from the additional scenes. Exactly the relation between the happenings in the bunker and the outside are now a way better balanced. The, added with lots of new sequences, odyssey of Peter and the longer decampment through the bombed Berlin show more clearly how the civilians felt during the last days of war and the helplessness of the officers who try to think about a future civil life.
Inside the bunker Göbbels children are more examined which helps to explain his oldest dauther’s reaction. Various other sequences are actually just a make-over and don’t contribute to the movie. Compared is the DVD with the theatrical version and the German free-TV version (by ARD) in its extended version.

Göbbels adds that Berlin gives an opportunity to succeed and that if Hitler is about to die he has to find his end in the ruins of Berlin. He ends that Hitler ows this to his historical rank and his influence on the world history.

The parents of Peter are having a dispute in their room. The mother defends her son that he is able to fight for the country at the frontline while his father, who lost his arm, wasn't. It is assumed he left the family to fight while the bombs were coming down on Berlin. The father explains how Hitler made them all to human shields at the frontline and that he must be mad to send 2 millions of children against the Russians. Peter, who recently came home, notices the situation and runs away. Afterwards one can see Weidling who sits at a table with drunken soldiers and still waits for Hitler.
