Hostel: Part II

Comparison:

  • R-Rated
  • Unrated Director's Cut
Release: Oct 23, 2012 - Author: Rüdiger - Translator: DaxRider123 - external link: IMDB
With his Hostel movies, Eli Roth was partly responsible for the boom of the torture movies during the last few years. Some of these movies were okay, some were just awful. In general, they share the fact that they are quite violent and graphic. As a result, they face quite a few problems in terms of censorship - Hostel II's Director's Cut, for example, was banned in Germany.

However, the DVD that you can buy in Germany is quite interesting. First, it was based on the R-Rated Theatrical Version, thus having the original colors of the movie. Since the Unrated Version does not have the original coloring, the image porting of the Blu-Ray is completely messed up - there's too much contrast and the color saturation is just too high, making dark spots way too dark. Additionally, the German DVD is - apart from a US rental DVD - the only one you can buy that includes the Theatrical Version. However, recently we came across a TV broadcast on Channel 5 (June 30th, 2012). It was obvious that it was also the original R-Rated Theatrical Version, which can be linked to the alternative material and the correct colors.

The differences between the two versions can be seen during two scenes. On the one hand there's the infamous "Lady Bathory-scene" and on the other hand there's Stuart's castration.

This is a comparison between the R-Rated Theatrical Version (aired on June 30th, 2012 on the British Channel 5) and the Uncensored Unrated Unrated Director's Cut released by Sony Pictures UK.

The two versions differ in 9 scenes. One of them includes alternative material, while the other 8 scenes of the R-Rated version were censored. The Unrated Director's Cut is 26.7 sec. longer than the Theatrical Version.

The rest of the difference in time results from minor loss that happened before or after commercial breaks.
