Blackenstein (aka Black Frankenstein)

original title: Blackenstein

Comparison:

  • Theatrical Version
  • Video Version
Release: Apr 29, 2018 - Author: brainbug1602 - Translator: Tony Montana - external link: IMDB
Compared are the Theatrical Version and the Video Version. Both versions are available on the US Blu-ray by Severin.

Female scientist Winifred starts her new job at the clinic of Dr. Stein who has developed some specific DNA serum that slows down the aging process. Winifred asks her new boss if he could also help her fiancÚ Eddie, a Vietnam vet who has left his arms and legs and who is currently in some care facility. Dr. Stein agrees but his jealous assistant Malcomb messes with the serum so that Eddie does get new arms and legs but it does not take long and Eddie starts mutating into some hrrible creature that leaves a blood trail at night.

The Blaxploitation version of Frankenstein has absolutely nothing in common with the original novel or the movie and goes its own, rather weird way. The noble intentions of two scientists are being messed with - hence the eponymous creaure. The debut of director William A. Levey is kind of mediocre, the origin history of the movie is much more interesting than the movie itself. Criminal lawyer Frank R. Saletri wanted to work in the movie business and produced Blackenstein for which some of his clients were hired as actors, among them Joe De Sue and Liz Renay. For Dr. Stein's lab, original "Frankenstein" props were used by the way.

There are two different versions of Blackenstein: The Video Version and the Theatrical Version, the latter being approx. 10 minutes shorter. The Video Version appears to be some kind of preview versions. There are numerous differences, most of the cuts being made for pace reasons only. A lot of shots are slightly shorter, there are some recuts and there is some new footage as well. The most striking difference is probably the additional footage in the Theatrical Version: Eleanor is being examined by Dr. Stein who realizes his serum does not work any longer. Also, a boy witnesses Eddie leave and gives his descritpion to the police which leads them to Dr. Stein in the first place. In addition to an opening with Winifred and Dr. Stein being in the lab together, the Video Version contains numerous of extended dialogs - such as the conversation between Dr. Stein and Winifred at the very beginning of the movie and the night club scene with the stand-up comedian is longer as well. However, really interesting is the fact that some of the bloody scenes are also a little shorter in the Theatrical Version.

The US Blu-ray by Severin contains both versions but only the Theatrical Version is available in good qualitly. The Video Version has been recontructed based on the good master of the Theatrical Version, the missing are inserts from a rather bad source though. Severin made sure that there is no going back and forth within a scene. As a result, if a scene is shorter in the Theatrical Version, the Video Version contains the entire scene as insert in rather bad quality. When there is a scene with numerous cuts, odds are the Video Version contains the entire sequence as insert.
The bonus is quite interesint and allows a look into the origin history of the movie. Highlight is "Monster Kid" in which the little sister of Frank R. Saletri is being interviewed while some archive footage Lugosi's mansion is being shown.

For those who have not seen the movie yet: Watch the Theatrical Version first. Fans with bad taste or people suffering from insomnia might as well watch the Video Version.

The US DVD by Xenon contains the Video Version by the way. And yet, it is not recommendable at all because the picture is way too dark.
