Comparison between the cut BBFC 18 VHS by First Independent Films and the uncut version, taken from the German FSK 12 DVD by Cine Plus/Mawa.
47 seconds are missing in one scene.
The well-made drama about the drug addict Jim Carroll (Leonardo DiCaprio) was shown uncut in UK theatres. The British VHS which was released in 1996, however, was cut in one shot. Jim's dream sequence of him going on a killing spree in his school was removed. The reason for this was a killing spree with 18 casualties which had taken place just one month before the release. Further releases also lacked the scene, only editions from the year 2000 and newer (both on VHS and DVD) contained it again.
Jim's dream of his killing spree lacks him entering the class room and shooting around with his shotgun. Some of his classmates are being hit and are hurled backwards. Mickey, Pedro and some other boys can be seen inbetween, cheering. At the end, Jim walks towards Father McNulty, points his gun at him at yells at him. Then Jim wakes up and the cut version continues.
