Theatrical Version 01:39:56 min.
Theatrical Version: 416.44 sec. Amanda lies asleep in bed, dreaming she would awaken to find Dawson sitting in front of her. She eventually wakes up with the sound of the front doorbell, trots down the stairs and opens the door to what turns out to be her mother. Amanda: "Oh, Mom, I overslept. I have to go back to the hospital." Evelyn: "Jared is fine, dear. I just talked to Frank." Amanda: "I just need to get dressed real quick. You're coming with me, right? Jared will want to see you. Evelyn: "Uh Amanda..." Amanda turns to her mother on the landing.
Cut back to Dawson, who, as a continuation of the scene in the schnitt, is standing further up at the railroad crossing, talking on the phone with the sheriff. He eventually agrees with the sheriff to bring his wounded brothers to the sheriff's station. Suddenly his father, Tommy, appears behind him at the railroad crossing and calls for his son. Dawson turns around and his father points a rifle at him and shoots him in the chest.
Cut back to Amanda and her mother. Evelyn: "Honey, I'm so sorry." Cut further to Dawson lying on the asphalt dreaming of Amanda and eventually dying. Cut back to Amanda bursting into tears and having to sit down on the landing, sobbing.
Now the Theatrical Version shows Dawson's funeral, which is not attended by many people, but is at least attended by April with her son and, of course, Amanda. A soft fade to black follows, then Amanda a year later at her new job at Child Protective Services and discussing something with her supervisor/chief. Her phone rings and it's Jared. Amanda: "Hey, Jared." Jared: "Hey, Mom." Amanda: "Are you okay?" Jared: "Yeah, why do you ask?" Amanda: "This is your third call in two days. Record breaking." Jared: "Very funny! So I'm actually calling because I wanted to tell you something. I thought Dr. Charbaneau said that after a year, I can file a claim to find out who donated my heart." Amanda: "Yes, and when are you going to apply?" Jared: "Well actually I already did." Amanda: "Ohhh." Jared: "And the information came yesterday. I'm going to take a quick look. So he was 39 years old when he died. Go figure, he was even from St. Olivia. Maybe you knew him? Dawson Cole." Amanda freezes speechless and breathless. Jared: "Mom, are you still there?" Amanda: "Yes, I'm still here." Jared: "So, did you know him?" Amanda: "Yes, I knew Dawson. Jared: "Maybe when I come on fall break, you can tell me about him." Amanda: "Yes, I'd love to do that." Jared: "Hey, Mom, I've got to go. I'm meeting a girl for lunch. She's in my English class." Amanda: "Okay." Jared: "I'm having a blast here. Love you, Mom." Amanda is now also asked by her supervisor if everything is okay. She answers in the same breathless affirmative, which is why he continues with the meeting.
Soft fade to Tuck's house, Dawson's voice is heard off-screen. As one notices later, it is a letter that Amanda finds in the house and which is read out. Dawson: "Dear Amanda, when I was young, I searched for a meaning behind everything. A reason or a purpose. But so much of what happened to me seemed purely coincidental. So I guess I had just lost faith in it. But when I survived that accident, I began to wonder if my life didn't have a higher purpose. Maybe I'm walking on a predetermined path, even if I can't recognize it yet. I think when I saw you again, I was given a second chance. The universe decided to give it to us. You have obligations, I understand that. And you want to fulfill them, so I love you even more. I hope to see you again one day. And if not, that the last few days have been the best of my life. I love the person you make me when you're with me. You are my dearest friend. My greatest love. You are the best part of my life. Forever. Dawson." Meanwhile, Amanda wanders out into the garden, which has a new glow thanks to Dawson, and remembers an excerpt from her youth with Dawson. She continues to stroll through the garden, towards the bench and sits there. Meanwhile, the camera zooms out further and further, finally fading to black and towards the credits.
Alternate version 01:40:19 min.
Alternate: 285:92 sec. Unlike the Theatrical Version, Amanda is sitting on the bed here trying to reach Dawson. But only an announcement sounds that under the number no connection is to be found. So she dials a second number, which is answered by Aaron, Dawson's foster nephew, so to speak. Aaron: "Hello?" Amanda: "Dawson?" Aaron: "Oh, he's not here." Amanda: "Uhhh and who is this?" Aaron: "I'm Aaron. He's kind of like my uncle. I'm supposed to be doing something here. In the garden. It's important to him." Amanda: "Do you know when he'll be back?" Aaron: "No, I don't know. He went back to the rig. He said he wanted to get as far away as he could. So...I guess he did that then." Amanda: "I see. Thank you."
Cut to the porch, here it is Amanda writing Dawson a letter: Amanda: "Dear Dawson, they say the ways of the Lord are mysterious. But honestly, I can't understand why life keeps getting in our way." Cut to Dawson in his lunch break, he gets the letter from Amanda and can be seen pensively "on deck" shortly after. Meanwhile, Amanda is now walking through her garden, her voice continues to be heard off-camera. Amanda: "Jared had a bad accident. For a few days we didn't know if he was going to make it. But he's going to be okay. The healing process is going to take quite a while and I need to be with him. I wanted to tell you that Frank and I broke up. But I need time with my son. I know you will understand that, more than anyone, because you have always understood me. Whatever happens, I want you to know that I have never loved anyone the way I love you. You gave me the best of you, you reminded me of the best of me. Everlasting love, Amanda." This is followed by a fade to black and, again, a notice that what follows happens a year later. We see the healed Jared together with his parents and how they are photographed, apparently by his girlfriend, several times. A brief conversation ensues between Amanda and her ex-husband Frank. Amanda: "You're doing a great job with him." Frank: "Yeah. He's a great guy, too. Amanda: "Okay, well then, say hello to Nancy for me." Frank: "Will do." Amanda: "Take care, Frank. Frank: "See you sometime." Amanda: "Take care." Frank: "You too."
But here, too, there is a schnitt to Amanda's new employer, the Child Protection Agency, but in a different form, which is already noticeable in her outfit alone. Here she is also greeted by the receptionist and then goes on to the office of her supervisor. Here, the reason for the conversation is more or less the same as in the Theatrical Version, but presented in a slightly different way. Her supervisor invites her to lunch, which is why Amanda replies that she's just going to get her bag. But the receptionist also comes in and says that there is someone who wants to speak to Amanda. Dawson is standing in the doorway, holding a bouquet of roses. Amanda: "Dawson." Dawson: "It's just unbelievable. My truck broke down right in front of this building and I was hoping...I was hoping that maybe you would jump start me." Without further ado, Amanda walks up to him and they both kiss intimately. The receptionist says to the supervisor that he should release Amanda for the day, then Amanda and Dawson drive to Tuck's house. Dawson leads Amanda into the garden, which he has restored with much love and diligence. Amanda is all the more speechless now and there is another kiss scene. Afterwards, both stroll through the garden to the bench and sit down. Here, too, the camera zooms out further and further and finally fades to black and to the end credits.
Difference: 130.52 sec Theatrical Version longer
