Theatrical Version 01:34:55 min.
Theatrical: 51.76 sec. At this point, the Theatrical Version shows Dawson sitting at the table writing a letter. Afterwards, Amanda on the cell phone trying to reach him, but the phone just vibrates unheeded on the table as Dawson is busy outside again. She tells him that a lot has changed and that she wants to tell him that she loves him and asks him to call her back. Throughout this, we briefly see Amanda on the phone, mostly Dawson in the garden handing out new seeds.
Alternate version 01:34:55 min.
Alt: 18:24 sec. The alternate version here immediately shows Dawson spreading seeds in the garden. This happens here without interschnitts to Amanda, besides, for example, the emptying of the sack here is slightly alternative or we see Dawson here exclusively at the end thoughtfully examining his work.
Difference: 33.52 sec. Theatrical longer Theatrical Version 01:36:06 min Theatrical: 8.68 sec. The tracking shot down the first floor hospital hallway over to Amanda is shortened, plus she looks and reacts somewhat alternatively to the doctors walking by.
Alternate version 01:35:33 min.
Alternate: 12:36 sec. The tracking shot from the hospital hallway on the first floor over to Amanda on the sofa sets in sooner in the alternate version and is otherwise slowed down or extended. In addition, Amanda reacts alternatively here with a sighing "Oh God". With the following shot of the doctor who comes up to her and speaks to her, both versions run parallel again.
Difference: +3.68 sec. alt longer Theatrical Version 01:36:20 min. Theatrical: 164.84 sec. The explanation or conversation about Jared's condition is alternative in both versions. In the Theatrical Version, Jared has suffered a traumatic brain injury from his car accident and his heart is a concern to the doctors. Frank finally comes in, asks quite hysterically what happened, and is asked by Amanda to just listen. The doctor goes on to explain that Jared's heart valve has been torn off and that this is irreparable and that he therefore needs a donor heart very quickly. During the last explanations, Jared is shown in his hospital bed, the camera moves over from him to Amanda. Then Jared is shown again in a closer shot.
Exclusive to the Theatrical Version, an entire scene with Dawson now follows: Dawson is just getting into his car and driving off. He's driving through the streets when his brothers appear behind him, come menacingly close, and just barely overtake him at a railroad crossing. Dawson thinks nothing of it when the incoming voicemail message from Amanda arrives and he listens to it. Suddenly, his brothers reappear behind him. They now try to push Dawson along with the car onto the tracks at the passing train. Dawson holds against it by means of the reverse gear, but is now even shot at and takes cover.
Abee and Ted get out and slowly approach the vehicle. But when they arrive, Dawson is no longer in the cab. Instead, he has hidden under the car and is now hitting Abee directly in the shin with a wrench. Cut to his brother Ted who is now sneaking around the car, fires a shot, but only hits Abee in the other leg. Abee is now holding his other leg, screaming in pain, when suddenly Dawson appears behind his other brother and knocks him down.
Alternate version 01:35:50 min.
Alt: 88:96 sec. By means of partially deviated or shortened/extended takes, the doctor states here that Jared suffered a compound femur fracture as a result of the accident that has already been surgically repaired. In addition, he suffered a severe concussion here, which is why certain areas of the brain show severe swelling. Here, too, Frank now joins in almost the same, partly but slightly shortened takes, and is asked by Amanda to be quiet and listen. The doctor now explains that she has no prognosis and we have to wait and see. Amanda explains to the doctor that she has already lost a child. The doctor tells her that she can understand her and then leaves the couple. Here, it subsequently becomes clear that Frank continues to be plagued by his alcohol consumption, since he is explicitly told by Amanda to sober up first.
Cut to Jared in the hospital bed, who here has a splinted/screwed or bandaged leg alternatively to match his injuries, and has also had his head bandaged. Here, the camera now slides around as well, but in an alternative way, and towards Amanda as Frank enters the room in the background. With the follow up shot of Amanda leaning against the vending machine, both versions then run parallel again.
Difference: 75.88 sec. Theatrical longer Theatrical Version 01:39:15 min. Theatrical: 37.16 sec. The shot lingers behind Amanda who continues down the hall after the doctor. It goes around the corner, the camera now shows Amanda from the front. In the hallway, she is just approached by Frank with Jared in the hospital bed. Amanda: "What's going on? What happened? Frank: "They are preparing him for surgery. They have a donor heart. Amanda: "What?!" Frank: "Now he has a chance."
Cut to the waiting area in front of the surgery. Frank and Amanda, it seems, have been waiting for quite some time. The doctor comes out, but only smiles - surgery successful. There follows another reverse schnitt to the outside area. Amanda is sitting alone on one of the benches in front of the hospital.
Alternate version 01:37:29 min.
Alternate: 166:52 sec. Here, Amanda walks behind the doctor in different shot. The shot with perspective from behind breaks off earlier, for it, the following shot from the front is substantially longer and the lady doctor is shown first. In addition, we pass the counter of the ward registration desk. Cut to Jared in bed, a nurse is checking his pulse when the doctor and Amanda enter the room in the background. Amanda: "What's wrong?" Frank: "He was awake for a minute. The swelling is going down. He's responding well to treatment." Amanda relieved, "Thank God."
Now here follows the almost identical exterior shot of the hospital, before it continues alternatively again with Amanda on the bench (very good to see at the people in the background). Exclusively here, Frank also joins in at a slow pace. Frank: "May I?" Amanda: "Yes." Frank now sits down next to Amanda on the bench. Amanda: "How is he?" Frank: "He's asleep now. As I sat by Jared's bedside, I got to thinking. Amanda: "About what?" Frank: "Well, about a beautiful girl at college that I had noticed the very first day. She was the perfect woman for me and I did everything possible to impress her. I became comfortable. I started drinking...and stopped trying. How was I supposed to know who you were when I was basically always absent!!!"
Cut to Amanda just entering her son's room. Amanda: "Hi, honey." Jared: "Hi, Mom." Amanda: "And how are you feeling?" Jared: "Super good. Couldn't be better. Do you have any idea when I'm getting out?" Amanda: "I don't know. It's going to be a while. They have to operate again and then you're going to need a long rehab for now." Jared: "But I can still go to college?" Amanda: "Probably not. For now, anyway. I don't want to fool you. I've talked to the doctors. You've got a lot of work ahead of you. It's not going to be easy, but your dad and I, we'll always be here for you. I promise you that. Okay?" Jared: "Yeah, okay."
