Comparison between the theatrical version and the unrated version, both as VOD versions from iTunes US * 20x exclusive material in the unrated version with a duration of 71 sec (= 1:11 min)
M3GAN 2.0 disappoints in theaters - alternate cut for home cinema![]() This may also explain in part why M3GAN, despite its often critically discussed PG-13 rating, still grossed a respectable $180 million, while the sequel M3GAN 2.0, released in June 2025, fell well short of expectations with box office results of less than $40 million. The fact that, after the horror elements of the original, this sequel was more of an almost trashy action movie certainly didn't appeal to some viewers. Perhaps the spin-off SOULM8TE, which is supposedly clearly intended as an R-rated erotic thriller, will fare better. In any case, the expectation of censorship after part 1 was probably in the back of the minds of some interested parties, so it came as little surprise that director Gerard Johnstone promised an unrated version for part 2, which was also shown with a PG-13 rating, shortly after its theatrical release in early July. This happened faster than expected: US VOD providers were already equipped with the theatrical version, and at least on some platforms, such as iTunes and Fandango, the unrated version could also be found - hidden in the bonus material. Both versions will be available together on physical media, especially 4K UHD/Blu-ray, in the US, for example, from the end of September 2025.
The differences in the Unrated version of M3GAN 2.0![]() Two relatively short but completely new scenes have been added. On the one hand, we now see how M3GAN 2.0 is “delivered” from a van in a large box, which at least closes a small logical gap. One might have expected more brutal moments here, but with the small jump into the camera (seen in the first trailer and raising corresponding expectations), the scene ends and there is no further brutality to be found. The same goes for another conversation between Christian and his helpers, which doesn't really contribute anything relevant to the plot. There are also no audio changes: the word “shit” is used more often in the theatrical version, and even the F-bomb is used once, but not a single additional cuss word has been added in the unrated version. Die-hard fans also missed the “smoking hot warrior princess” comment from early trailers, which promised a wilder action fest. As mentioned, it's basically still pretty much the same movie, just without a few typical MPA censorships and two rather insignificant plot scenes. Ultimately, however, the unrated version is clearly recommended for anyone interested in seeing it for the first time.
Running times are listed according to the following scheme Alternative
02:53-02:55 / 02:53-02:54 The severed head is only visible in the unrated version and falls into the cooking pot. The theatrical version instead stays longer on the shadow shot. Theatrical version 0.4 sec longer
Alternative 03:21 / 03:20-03:21 When the knife hits the hand, blood can be seen for a few frames in the unrated version. Incidentally, this was also the case in the first trailer mentioned at the beginning. No time difference
Alternative 14:35-14:39 / 14:34-14:38 When the neck is broken, the shot is slightly longer in the unrated version, while the theatrical version cuts to the news report in the first few frames. However, the news report starts a little earlier in the theatrical version, which evens things out. No time difference
Alternative 23:43 / 23:42-23:43 The flashback to the neck break uses a slightly different and longer moment of the take in the unrated version. Here you can see more of the turn, while the theatrical version starts when the head is already mostly turned and then has a few more frames at the end. Unrated 0.2 sec longer
40:16 / 40:16 When AMELIA reaches for the throat, the close-up begins a moment earlier. 0.3 sec
Alternative 40:16-40:17 / 40:16-40:18 The spine being torn out can be seen in an alternative, significantly bloodier take. Unrated 0.6 sec longer
62:44 / 62:45-63:09 After seeing the Chinese ambassador walk past the protesters outside, there is the first of two completely additional scenes: A van pulls up and drops off a box, which explains how M3GAN 2.0 gets inside. In the warehouse, someone complains: "Hey! You can't leave this here! I didn't sign for it!“ When he opens the box, he sees M3GAN inside and says, ”The hell is this?" M3GAN 2.0 then pulls out a knife and jumps at him (or the camera). 24.4 sec
Alternative 67:20 / 67:45 Digital blood was added here or is missing in the theatrical version. No time difference
Alternative 67:23 / 67:48 Ditto. No time difference
Alternative 67:26-67:27 / 67:51-67:52 As with The Avengers, the tip on the back was removed for the theatrical version. In the shot immediately following, blood is also spread across the entire front of the staff in the unrated version. No time difference
Alternatively 67:41 / 68:06-68:07 The last two frames of the stab wound that can still be seen in the theatrical version now have additional blood splatters. Only in the unrated version is the shot slightly longer and the stake is pulled out again from a different angle. Unrated 1.2 seconds longer
Alternative 67:52 / 68:18 When the staff is pulled out of the two, only the unrated version shows a little blood. No time difference
Alternative 68:30 / 68:56 Here, the tip can also be seen in the theatrical version, but without blood. When it is pulled out, some red juice splatters again in the unrated version. No time difference
Alternative 70:03 / 70:29 After the actual hit happened offscreen, more blood was added here in a long shot under the point where the staff pierced the body (or reduced in the theatrical version). No time difference
92:10 / 92:36-92:59 First, some censorship: The drill finds its way into Gemma's head from the side, and some blood runs down. This is followed by another additional scene in which Christian briefly discusses the situation with his employees. His security chief Todd says that they are having trouble locating the “second target.” Christian is not understanding and instructs him again to find him, whereupon Todd dutifully leaves. 22.4 sec
Alternative 103:57-103:59 / 104:46-104:48 How Cady breaks Christian's arm can now be seen in an alternative, closer shot. Half the bone and other internal organs are hanging out. The theatrical version instead has a shot from a distance and one from close up, where his jacket is still hanging over his stretched arm. No time difference
Note: This is exactly how it looks shortly afterwards, with the jacket. Unfortunately the unrated version only uses the same footage from the theatrical version, resulting in a continuity error.
Alternative 104:47-104:48 / 105:36-105:37 In an alternative take, much more blood splatters against the window when Christian dies. No time difference
Alternative 104:56-104:58 / 105:45-105:47 When M3GAN 2.0 marches out with Christian's severed arm, the unrated version offers more gory details. No time difference
Alternative 105:23-105:24 / 106:12-106:12 Again, when the camera pans up to her. No time difference
Alternative 105:35-105:39 / 106:23-106:27 In the theatrical version, the fingerprints were also covered in black, but in the unrated version they can be seen in all their glory. No time difference
