45:03 / 55:43-55:45
Popeye's legs in close-up. 1.5 sec
45:39 / 56:22-56:25 A shot of the audience. Then Popeye dodges punches again. 3.2 sec
46:54 / 57:45-60:52 After winning the fight, there is an additional scene in Popeye's room. He initially drills a hole through the door and looks through it. Then he sneaks out and sees Olive taking care of the baby (Swee'pea). The two discuss something about who the child is more likely to take after and what else is planned for him in the future. This segues into a song ("Sail/stay with me"). Popeye, at the door: "Can't see nothin'. There it is." Popeye, to Swee'pea: "Hey, Cap'n Pea. Lookit there, Olives. He's got my eye." Olive: "He does not have your eyes. He's got my eyes. He's got your mouth." Popeye: "Dizzy dame. One day, Swee'peas, he's gonna go to school and bust bigger kids in the mush. Yeah, you like that, don't you? Yeah." Olive: "And we'll move into a vine-covered cottage on a shady lane, and we'll garden together, and we'll play house." After the song, you hear another "Oh, Popeye" from her. 179.5 sec (= 3:00 min)
47:56 / 61:56-62:10 Popeye and Olive talk at greater length with Swee'pea, while Nana looks on in amazement. Olive: "So then I asked, "Swee'pea, will Popeye be seriously maimed? No?" Popeye: "That's two for two. That can happen anyway, you know?" 13.4 sec
48:17 / 62:32-62:34 Wimpy a little longer. 1.9 sec. 50:11 / 64:33-64:42 A first shot of Olive looking out for Wimpy and Swee'pea. Then Popeye walks around impatiently; "Everything's gonna be all right. Now, he's with his Uncle Wimps, and they've only been gone for a couple of hours. Wait a minute. This town could've been built in a couple of hours." 8.5 sec
50:36 / 65:08-65:11 At the horse race, you first see a shot of Wimpy with Swee'pea on his arm. 2.7 sec
51:19 / 65:56-66:10 Popeye and Olive on the boat a moment longer; "Straight ahead." Wimpy then hides from the passing Castor for a moment. 13.3 sec
52:28 / 67:21-67:24 Popeye and Olive stumble around a bit longer. She grumbles at him a bit as they do so. 2.9 sec
56:31 / 71:37-71:50 After Popeye's song, black fades out first and Olive backs up. Popeye then joins in with Swee'pea on his arm and says, "I hate to do this, Swee'pea, but it's neskessary. Sometimes you gotta do tings you don't want to do when you gotta do 'em, but..." Nana: "It's cruel, Mr. Eye--" 11.8 sec
65:51 / 81:34-81:36 Bluto goes to his bunk a little longer with Swee'pea on his arm. 1.9 sec. Recut / Alternative. 67:15-67:58 / 83:04-85:21 In the original version, you see the angry Bluto, then Popeye's father Poopdeck Pappy talks to Swee'Pea a bit. Bluto also interferes briefly already here. This segues into a little song about his hard sailor life ("It's not easy being me"). While Bluto then ties him up, he throws in bits of his music ("not easy being mean/large") in between.
In the EU version, there are alternate shots of Poopdeck Pappy and Bluto instead, with even some additional footage of their own. The scene here plays out entirely without a piece of music, but with a bit more monologue from Poopdeck Pappy. When Bluto ties him up, several shots from the original version are arranged differently. Synchronously, the versions run again with Popeye striding to the rescue from outside.
original version 88.9 sec (= 1:29 min) longer 69:11 / 86:37-86:46 More discussion about Pappy. Popeye: "He ain't no Commodores. A hoity-toity Commodore. He would never be that." Olive: "A rat, a crook, a kidnapper, and the Commodore!" 8.9 sec
69:24 / 87:00-87:03 A long shot starts a little earlier. 2.8 sec. 74:37 / 92:28-92:43 Before Popeye and Pappy come out, you see the angry people again, "Come back here, Bluto!" Then some discussion between father and son. Pappy: "And don't you ever pick up another knife. If you do, I'll make you eat it. You'll be known as the sword-swallowin' sailor." Popeye: "That's me pap. I know it is." 12.9 sec
76:12 / 94:22-92:23 Olive looks around a little earlier. 1.4 sec. Cut / Alternative. 76:22-77:02 / 94:34-97:15 By the time we arrive at Scab Island, the versions now diverge extensively. In the original version, Olive is shown in her tube. Already during this, as well as in other shots, Popeye and Pappy argue at length. Popeye does not recognize him as a father, whereupon Pappy first wants to prove this with the obvious similarities and then gives an almost endless rant about children. Bluto: "Olive Oyl? Swee'pea? What are you doin', making a salad? I want me treasure. Do you hear me? I want me treasure." Pappy: "I am the commodore of this ship and don't you give orders." Popeye: "Oh, yeah? Well, I'm the commodore of me friends. You command this privy, and I'll commands me friends." Pappy: "Is that any way to talk to your father?" Popeye: "You ain't my father. Me father was tall and kind. He looks like Abraham Lincoln." Pappy: "Don't tell me what I yam. Where'd he go? Where'd he go? I says I am your father. I ought to know whose father I is and whose father I ain't." Popeye: "Who says?" Pappy: "I says. I says." Popeye: "I says avast, you old bilge rat, before I use you as an anchor." Pappy: "Bilge rat? Bilge rat? Bilge rat? Mutiny. Mutiny. I am your one and only father. Lookit. Lookit. The same bulgy arms!" Popeye: "No resemblink." Pappy: "The same squinky eye." Popeye: "What squinky eye?" Olive: "Help! Popeye!" Pappy: "We even got-- We even got the same pipe. Look. This ain't me pipe." Popeye: "You took the bait, you old--" Pappy: "I've never seen anything like this before in me life. Talkin' to your poor old father like that. You disobedient brat. You're spoiled, that's what you are. Spoiled. Children. Children. Kids. Phooey. Phooey. Give 'em everything they want and what do you get in return? Nuts. Nuts. Nuts. Nothin' but heartache. Heartache, sadness, and miserky. Once in a while, you try to give them a bath and they don't want it. And another bad time when you want to do something that you really want to do, but all they want to do is not what you want to do. Bless their little hearts. If they were made out of gold, I'd like to sell 'em on the open marketplace. I could make me a fortune." Castor: "I could have made a fortune--" Pappy: "Kids! They don't know what they're doin'. Kids. Dad-blast 'em. They're gonna lead you to ruin. That's what they gonna do-- lead you to ruin. They cry at you when they're young, they yell at you when they're older, they borrows from you when they're middle-aged, and they leave you alone to die without even payin' you back. Children. Phooey. You give 'em everything they want, and what do you get back in return? You get nothin'. They're just smaller versions of us, you know. But I'm not so crazy about me in the first place. So why do I want one of them? I ask you. Children. Children. Little children. You pour your heart out to 'em, give 'em everything they want, give 'em candy and a lot of toys. And what do you get back? You get a lot of noise."
In the EU version instead another shot of Bluto with Swee'Pea. Then to some music shortened and partly with exclusive material we see various shots from the last meters to the island.
original version 115.4 sec (= 1:55 min) longer 79:15 / 99:34-99:56 Popeye and entourage jump or fall off the boat. Lastly, Swee'Pea on Bluto's boat again. Geezil: "Get the water out of the boat." Wimpy: "Lower the lifeboats. Old women first." Castor: "Portly men first! Portly men first!" Popeye: "Oh, shit!" 21.2 sec
The German DVD has the Buena Vista logo after the credits. The US Blu-ray has a reference to Paramount.
