Comparison between the TV Version (taken from the Blu-ray) and the Extended Version (taken from the British DVD)
- 9 alterations, 6 of those including alternative footage
- Difference in running time: 60.5 sec. (= 1:01 min.)
Almost every episode of this sitcom classic was released in an extended version on the US DVDs. For TV some cuts were done in order to trim the episodes to the usual format, however, some censoring can be found as well. In Great Britain, only the TV versions were released on DVD at first yet the newer "15th Anniversary Edition" contains the extended episodes as well and was used as a comparison here.
The new Blu-ray release is identical all around the world and contains – only the TV Versions, the extensions can also not be found in the bonus material. People interested in buying the series now have to decide: Longer episodes or better picture quality? The latter is really great on Blu-ray, rescanning of the original 35mm tape led to a brilliant picture and it is now also in the 16:9 format with more information on the side of the picture. On the other hand, about 2 minutes are missing per episode.
The here compared episode 1x05 ("The One With The East German Laundry Detergent ") is one minute longer in the extended version. There's actually not that much more to tell. The only mentionable thing is maybe the quite neat extended scene with Chandler and Janice in which she manages to twist him around her little finger again.
It's also worth mentioning that the exterior shot of the Central Perk Café immediately after the opening credits is different.
Only the TV version has a short black screen right after the opening credits.
Curiously enough, the following shot of the Central Perk is different, which can be told from the different people inside and from the man who walks into the picture solely in the TV version.
Probably just exclusive on the Blu-ray...
In the extended version, Monica talks more extensively and is therefore shown longer. The words in brackets come up before and after the actual extension.
"(Chandler, nobody likes breaking up with someone) except for Kevin Millmore, may he rot in hell. (You just gotta do it.)"
The following shot of Chandler begins a bit earlier in the TV version; Monica's last words can still be heard. No pictures.
Extended Version 4.3 seconds longer
Ross is shown a bit longer in the TV version (no pictures).
In the extended version, Chandler adds something to his breaking-up scenario: "You try to, you know, run out of the restaurant before she's actually finished the note."
EV 4.3 seconds longer
In the TV version, Monica sits down by Joey, who then says "I made a huge mistake, I never should have broken up with her".
The extended version stays in the previous shot of Joey and Monica already sits down. The dialogue is also a bit longer at this point.
Joey: "I wanna be kind, you know, like a snowflake or...or...a..."
Monica: "Something else like a snowflake?"
Joey: "Yeah, yeah. I made a huge mistake, I never should have broken up with her."
EV 10.7 seconds longer
An earlier and alternative beginning in Ross' apartment.
In the extended version, Chandler plays with Joey's plastic dinosaurs and Joey says: "Hold on a sec. You need not to touch any of those..."
Chandler puts them away; Ross finishes the phone call and tells him that Monica won't come for the laundry washing.
The TV version immediately begins with Ross talking briefly on the phone and then hanging up. But there was used an alternative take, which can be told from the different position of the laundry basket. Moreover, they switch earlier to the total view, in which he stands up from the bed.
EV 6.5 seconds longer
Chandler adds (when they talk about Ross' date): "You haven't done that in a while."
Ross: "The point is, is it a date if she doesn't know we're going on a date?"
Chandler: "Yes, absolutely! Saturday night: all rules apply!"
There's only one shot of Chandler's reaction in the TV version before it continues with the Launderama.
The conversation goes on a little bit in the extended version.
Phoebe: "So how is it going with Janice?"
Chandler: "Going? Things aren't going. She got me socks."
Phoebe: "Oh these go with your Rockys. My God, she must really care about you."
Chandler looks at her angrily and she adds: "I'm sorry!"
Chandler takes his espresso and gets back to Janice.
EV 15.3 seconds longer
While the extended version has a smooth transition, the TV version shows Monica and Joey a bit longer and then switches to a black screen.
+ 1.8 sec.
In the TV version, the scene ends with a close-up, in which Janice fans for some air while Chandler sits helplessly beside her.
The extended version has a shot from further away and there's also some dialogue.
Chandler: "This isn't about you..."
Janice: "Oh, I know this is not about me. This is totally about your fear of commitment!"
Chandler: "What fear of commitment?! I don't have a fear of commitment!"
Janice: "Oh please!"
Chandler: "I don't!"
Janice: "Oh please!"
Chandler: "I don't! I'm ready to commit anytime!"
Janice, a little bit more satisfied again: "Really?"
Chandler looks surprised.
