US Blu-ray with 2D and 3D version |
The US Blu-ray from Kino Lorber was compared with the VOD version from Epix. To facilitate their rehabilitation, some female inmates of Santa Helena Women's Correction Facility are granted a two-day furlough. Kay wants to break free from her former lover and pimp, Mike, but first, she endures a beating before succumbing to the charm of an aggressive lover. A woman turned junkie due to unsatisfied desires tries to reconcile with her husband, Jack. Joyce, who murdered her husband, visits his brother Ken in his workshop, leading to a gang rape when a biker gang appears. Artist Freddy receives unexpected company from Toni, who promptly sleeps with him. When Toni's jealous cellmate Gertie shows up, a dispute ensues, culminating in a threesome. Cindy goes to her lover Johnny, who is hiding from the police with a suitcase full of money. The two plan their escape to Miami, but after sex, the cops arrive, and Johnny has no choice but to make a run for it. It can't always be Emmanuelle, 9 1/2 Weeks, or Basic Instinct. Not every erotic film has to be smoothly ironed; sometimes, basic instincts need to be satisfied with trashy, dirty sexploitation. Sometimes it has to be bushy beards and unshaved beavers, and in those moments, a film like Prison Girls comes in handy. Contrary to what the title suggests, only a small part of the film is set in prison. But no need to worry, the expected extensive shower scene, including a brawl, is shown right at the beginning. Prison Girls is episodically crafted, following the women on their furloughs, which sometimes end in more or less consensual sexual activities. Bizarre theories, such as an unsatisfied woman becoming a junkie and a prostitute because she lacks good sex from her husband, alternate with unpleasant rape scenes. The film was shot in 3D, prompting director Tom DeSimone to showcase the breasts of Uschi Digard and Candy Samples in a fitting manner. Flesh Gordon star Jason Williams plays the evil pimp, and Annik Borel, known from Werewolf Woman, portrays Gertie. Shorter Version on US Blu-RayOn June 27, 2023, Kino Lorber released Prison Girls on Blu-ray in the USA. The release includes both the 2D and 3D versions. It is Anaglyph 3D, so no special setup or TV is required; the included red-blue glasses are sufficient to enjoy the 3D effect. A VOD version from Epix (now MGM+) was also available for comparison, running about six minutes longer. The Kino Lorber Blu-ray lacks the entire threesome love scene between Freddie, Toni, and Gerti. Later, there are two extensions in the sex scene between Cindy and Johnny, including an oral sex scene. In one of Cindy and Johnny's scenes in the Epix VOD version, dialogues are audible that are repeated later, and in the second extension, Johnny moves his lips, but no dialogue is heard. In the Freddie, Toni, and Gerti scene, there is no dialogue, only music. The assumption is that the Kino Lorber Blu-ray contains the theatrical version of the film, and the Epix VOD version reintegrated those formerly removed scenes. The missing/duplicated English dub seems to indicate this. The Freddie, Toni, and Gerti scene is included as a deleted scene in the Blu-ray bonus material, while the additional scenes of Cindy and Johnny are unfortunately missing. Presumably, they had access to the same master, but it was scanned differently. The Epix version is only minimally restored. The colors don't quite match, and there are more or less noticeable dirt spots in the image during the film. In contrast, the Kino Lorber Blu-ray is very good. Depending on the settings, the framing between the Blu-ray and the VOD version differs. Sometimes the Blu-ray shows more, sometimes less, and sometimes the framing is simply shifted.
The image on the Kino Lorber Blu-ray was mirrored in two places to correct goofs. This affects the scene at the beginning when Cindy hangs up her towel before going into the shower and, towards the end, two shots of Dr. Reinhardt standing in front of the file cabinet. Overall, one can live quite well with the Kino Lorber Blu-ray. The additional scene of Freddie, Toni, and Gerti is over five minutes long and quite dull, considering the three licking each other's bodies. The additional material of Uschi Digard as Cindy is much more interesting, even if the sound doesn't quite match. It's a shame that these scenes are not found in the Blu-ray bonus material. In the end, the three of them kiss each other all over their bodies.
Epix: 5:12 min [01:15:07][01:20:10] You can still see Cindy lying on Johnny. Johnny starts kissing Cindy's breasts. The two talk about going on a trip, but the dialog is not lip-synced. The same conversation can be heard again later.
Epix: 20 sec [01:15:13][01:20:37] Cindy starts kissing Johnny's upper body. Johnny opens his pants so that Cindy can start fellatio. Johnny becomes increasingly rough. The next shot starts earlier. Apparently Johnny has climaxed. In the scene, Johnny moves his mouth, but no dialog can be heard.
