Divide, The

Comparison:

  • R-Rated
  • Unrated
Release: May 13, 2012 - Author: Mike Lowrey - Translator: Mike Lowrey - external link: IMDB
Since his torture horror film Frontier(s), French director Xavier Gens is a household name among gorehounds. With the game adaptation Hitman, he also tried to take a step towards mainstream. Therefore, it was an interesting question how his next film The Divide could be categorized. Starring Michael Biehn, who likes to play characters that are on the egde of sanity, Milo Ventimiglia (Pathology), Lauren German (Hostel 2) and others, Gens created a claustrophobic play that's an intense depiction of constant decay of a group of people who have no choice but to live together after they escaped into the house's fallout shelter only seconds before certain death. Since there's no escape from their hideout, the interpersonal tensions start to get worse, leading to an ongoing, almost creeping dehumanization on several levels, sometimes slower, sometimes faster.

The Divide is very different from Gens' other works and still an interesting genre entry. Even though the location is quite limited, the actors manage to give intense performances that provoke constant interest for their characters. It doesn't take many effects of splatter to give the viewer an uncomfortable feeling and that alone is a reason why the film can be warmly recommended.

There are two versions of The Divide. Next to the MPAA-rated "R" version (for disturbing strong violence and sexuality, and for pervasive language) there's also an unrated cut that's featured on the US DVD and Blu-ray. Countries like Germany or the UK only got the R-Rated.
When comparing both versions, we see that the unrated cut contains material that's more or less helpful for character development. Towards the climax of the movie, it becomes apparent that the R-Rated misses some scenes that take some of the sick intensity of the events (e.g. the second sex scene). Whether this is MPAA-related can't be said for sure.
Extended scene with alternate material
0:04:04: After the starting credits, the Unrated has a slow dolly shot and shows the different people still being in shock and awe. Eva checks her mobile phone but it has no reception. The R-Rated offers a different and shorter shot of the shelter.
The UR runs 40,48 sec. longer

Extended scene with alternate material
0:05:08: Mickey comments dryly: "Not exactly the garden of Eden.". Then, he seals the shelter's entry door with duct tape and explains that radioactive dust is the reason for that. When he's done, he says: "Number one rule: No one opens that door until the radiation clears. You understand me? You wanna survive, you listen to me.". This is followed by shots of the other survivors. The R-Rated omits all that and just shows Delvin shortly.
63,44 sec.

Extended scene in the R-Rated
R-Rated: 0:04:34: Some more impressions from the shaking shelter.
The R-Rated runs 3,92 sec. longer

Additional scene
0:06:18: Adrien looks at the ceiling.
0,92 sec.

Extended scene with alternate material
0:06:48: The Unrated shows Josh and Bobby. Bobby freaks out when he realizes that he's covered in dust and thinks that he's contaminated. He screams but Mickey calms him down by saying that the dust is from the inside and the shelter is sealed tight. Sam takes some of the dust off and then talks to Mickey.

The R-Rated shows Josh and Bobby, as well, but uses a different take without the dusty part. After that, Sam is shown quickly.
The UR runs 12,32 sec. longer

Extended scene in the R-Rated
0:07:04: The R-Rated shows Mickey. He says that it's not safe to go outside.
1,36 sec.

Extended scene with alternate material
0:07:41: When Mickey answers the question when they can leave the shelter with: "When I say it.", Bobby turns away, irritated.

The Unrated shows Delvin asking Mickey what the plan is. Mickey says that he built this shelter and wanted to keep cool while his tenants above him were grilled in the blast.
The UR runs 16,24 sec. longer

R-RatedUnrated

Extended scene in the R-Rated
0:08:05: When Delvin asks Mickey for the radio, both versions differ slightly in the dialogue.

R-Rated:
Delvin: "Got a radio?"
Mickey: "What's it look like?"
Delvin: "Does it work?"
Mickey: "Give it a try."

Unrated:
Delvin: "Got a radio?"
Mickey: "Give it a try."
The R-Rated runs 2,28 sec. longer

Extended scene
0:11:35: When Mickey attacks Josh with the axe, the Unrated shows Marilyn with her daughter. Eva and Sam watch the scenery, too.
3,08 sec.

Extended scene with alternate material
0:14:47: The Unrated shows Marilyn borrowing a hairbrush from Eva. The shot of Sam differs in both cuts.
15,76 sec.

Extended scene
0:25:16: A bit longer how Josh and Bobby help the wounded Adrien sit down.
4 sec.

Added soundtrack in the R-Rated
R-Rated: 0:25:40: When Marilyn begins to furiously rip the tape from the door and several of the others have to stop her. Josh and Bobby carry her into an abandoned room. This scene has a soundtrack in the R-Rated while the Unrated doesn't.
No time difference

Extended scene with alternate material
0:30:13: The R-Rated implies that Mickey goes to his room without any comment. The Unrated shows the truth: Delvin asks him what he hides in his pocket and Mickey shows a packed sausage. This leads Delvin to the assumption that Mickey holds food from the others and Mickey rants that he has the right because it's his shelter. Delvin tells him to go to his room and Mickey goes off swearing.
The UR runs 32,84 sec. longer

Alternate material
0:34:57: When Josh looks into the room, the R-Rated shows Adrien looking back at him while the Unrated shows Eva.
0,88 sec.

R-RatedUnrated

Extended scene
0:42:42: Adrien asks Eva if she's a nurse but she denies.
11,88 sec.

Extended scene with alternate material
0:43:15: When Eva tells Adrien that she used to listen to his guitar playing in order to fall asleep, different shots of her are shown. In the Unrated, they look at each other a bit longer.
The UR runs 12 sec. longer

Extended scene
0:53:19: A lot of material is missing here. The group continues exploring Mickey's room (e.g. watching TV on the couch). Bobby and Marilyn have sex in another room. When Eva visits them and asks Marilyn if everything is okay with her, Marilyn is so spaced out that she even wants to persuade Eva to be a little "nicer" to the men, especially Josh. Eva is disgusted and leaves them furiously.
235,8 sec.

Extended scene in the R-Rated
R-Rated: 0:48:41: The R-Rated shows Bobby and Marilyn lying in bed together.
6,96 sec.

Additional scene
1:08:04: Eva finds a photograph of Mickey and his child in his wallet. When Adrien asks her what she found, she answers: "Nothing."
34,36 sec.

Extended scene
1:08:54: Only the Unrated shows that Bobby stops and decided to take a dump in the room where he leaves Mickey. Before he goes out of the room, he tells him: "Now you're not alone."
50,44 sec.

Extended scene
1:13:01: Josh, Bobby and Marilyn imitate barking dogs a little longer.
6,88 sec.

Extended scene
1:15:08: A big part of the rather sick sex scene is missing in the R-Rated. Eva observes the scenery where Bobby is dressed like soldier and continues to have sex with Marilyn. She is dressed with duct tape and gets fed beans by Josh who observes them while masturbating to it. When the act reaches its climax, Marilyn screams insanely.
48,36 sec.

Extended scene
1:18:05: After the vision involving his wife, Mickey screams in frustration. He yells that the others should come and get him because he still has 9 fingers left for them.
18,08 sec.

Additional scene
1:22:15: Bobby takes the helmet and puts it on Marilyn's head. She looks very apathetic and deranged. She salutes and if you wouldn't know the context, you could interpret Bobby's behavior as caring and consoling.

34,52 sec.

Added soundtrack in the R-Rated
