Comparison between the export version on the German DVD by Splendid and the original version on the Hong Kong Blu-ray by CN Entertainment.

7 differences, including
* One additional scene on the German DVD: 92,8 sec (= 1:33 min)
* 7x additional material on the Hong Kong Blu-ray: 49.2 sec

A few additional master errors with a duration of less than 0.5 sec each were not listed in the report.

Peace Hotel (German title: Never Die), released in 1995, marked Chow Yun-Fat's last film in Hong Kong at the time before he tried to gain a foothold in the US market. The action-packed drama was produced by John Woo, but you shouldn't expect a heroic bloodshed opera like the two are known for from their other collaborations. Nevertheless, it's worth seeing for fans and the distributors wanted to fulfill their expectations on the international market.

So for the final fight, an additional action scene was shot, in which Chow Yun-Fat shoots down countless opponents in the well-known slow-motion manner. Along with that, a shorter scene of the original version was also deleted, so that once again there is no really 100% complete version. Probably because of the original, there are some small flaws throughout the movie, which are also found on the German DVD.

Qualitatively, the Blu-ray from Hong Kong, released in April 2019, is by far superior and especially, in contrast to some older movies there, also in real HD. A relatively good picture quality is reported for the export scene, e.g. for the British DVD, but it was not available to us here. In any case, the German DVD by Splendid does not look so great. On VHS and Laserdisc, the additional scene was also shown in Hong Kong, but it was missing in the cinema, on DVD and now Blu-ray.

Runtimes are ordered as follows: German DVD in PAL / Hong Kong Blu-ray

10.7 sec

The very first shot after the (identical) opening credits has a bit more colour on Blu-ray: the lip print on the glass is visible in red. Otherwise, the flashback is black and white in both versions.

74:16-75:49 / 77:42-78:22

After the cigarette ash has blown away, the additional action scene follows in the export version. The army is now storming the Peace Hotel, heavily armed. But inside, David also loads his weapon and there is a big shootout. Very Woo-like, he slides down a ladder from the first floor and kills countless enemies. However, the whole thing remains absolutely bloodless.

In the Hongkong original version, the gang leader threatens the village inhabitants a little bit more. He comes towards them slowly and laughs insanely. Suddenly, he pulls out his gun and of course the people all take cover. Before something happens, you can hear Shau offstage on the horse.

When Shau arrives, the versions are synchronized again.

Export version 54.5 sec longer

78:36 / 81:16-81:18

Upon entering the house, the German DVD lacks an additional shot of swordplay.

Finally, a small image comparison. The German DVD is slightly trimmed on all sides and has a yellow tinge.
